HP unveils comprehensive HP OpenView strategy for managing internet computing; New HP OpenView software, superior perimeter security and investment protection turn Internet potential into enterprise reality
Business Wire, June 23, 1997
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 1997--Positioning itself to seize a leading position in Internet management, Hewlett-Packard Company today unveiled the industry's most comprehensive strategy for managing Internet computing. With the new HP OpenView Internet-management initiative, HP becomes the first company to deliver enterprise-class availability, security and service management for the Internet.
New HP OpenView Internet service manager software enables HP OpenView to collect performance metrics for Netscape Web Server and Microsoft(R) Internet Information Server -- data that is useful for proactive intranet planning and investment decisions. It enables HP OpenView to manage all five standard services for Microsoft Windows NT(R), functionality that no other vendor is providing. HP OpenView Internet service manager also has a link-auditing subsystem for content management, which ensures uninterrupted access to a company's online content.
"Our customers asked us to develop OpenView solutions to help them take control of network environments that have become exponentially more complex with the rise of the Internet," said Olivier Helleboid, general manager of HP's Network and System Management Division. "We've listened, and we've delivered. HP now is offering unparalleled management/security integration, intuitive browser GUIs, and powerful management and planning tools -- making the Internet an effective, distributed business tool for today, not just an empty promise."
To address the issue of Internet security, HP has partnered with Check Point, Raptor and TIS to allow mapping, polling and management of network devices through the companies' respective firewalls without compromising corporate security. In addition, OpenView network traffic now can be encrypted, preventing unauthorized access to potentially mission-critical data.
HP also has taken on the challenge of providing the extended functionality customers need by leveraging their existing information-technology (IT) investments. HP already offers the industry's only management tool that allows users to monitor all intranet elements through a single view, significantly improving problem isolation, diagnosis and resolution.
HP's resource- and performance-management solutions build on this consolidated view to help IT managers measure, monitor and manage Web-server resource utilization and performance. This functionality allows them to proactively maintain and improve service levels on an intranet before end users are impacted.
"The pressure is growing for IT managers to deliver service levels across intranet environments that translate into competitive advantages for their businesses," said Stephen DeWitt, Cisco's vice president of enterprise network management. "Cisco values its involvement with the HP OpenView Program because it will ultimately give Cisco and HP's mutual customers the ability to ensure quality of service to users across the enterprise."
