Lucent introduces Terranova® Express; streamlines software delivery over corporate intranets, dramatically cuts costs

Business Wire, March 11, 1997

MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 11, 1997--Lucent Technologies today announced a first-of-its-kind software delivery service, Terranova(r) Express, designed to simplify and streamline electronic software delivery (ESD) over corporate intranets.

Designed by Bell Laboratories, Terranova Express allows even novice computer users, who have never downloaded applications, to quickly and efficiently install software onto their workplace PCs without technical support.

Using Terranova Express, companies can establish electronic software storefronts on their intranets, sharply reducing software warehousing, shipping and installation costs. It also enables corporate IT managers to control application versioning among employees, making sure that desktops across the enterprise have access to the same software.

"Terranova Express represents the beginning of a new paradigm in software distribution," said Noel Terranova, Lucent Delivery Manager. "Now, online software transactions are a reality; it will open new opportunities for software publishers and licensing agents. Terranova Express has the potential to increase workers' productivity by placing the software they need at their fingertips.

Lucent Technologies will demonstrate Terranova Express at Booth No. 802 at the UniForum trade show, to be held in San Francisco, March 12-14.

Using Terranova Express, companies will be able to work more efficiently with third-party software licensing agents, permitting them to track which versions of software have been downloaded to clients across corporate intranets, even automatically arranging for billing reports.

In addition, electronic catalogues can be used on the system, permitting users to special-order other products. Those orders can be instantaneously transmitted to the licensing agent for quick processing.

"Terranova Express is a key component in managing and distributing data and applications across and between enterprises. It promises to fill some of the missing pieces required to support mission-critical, network-centric IT architectures," said James Greene III, research analyst at Summit Strategies in Boston.

"Terranova Express allows not only `Top-40' software but also proprietary software to be posted to secure corporate servers for quick access," Terranova stated. "It also allows software companies to be more confident that downloads and usage of their products are being accurately tracked and billed," he added.

Joe Popolo, Executive Vice President of Programmers Paradise, Inc., a Shrewsbury, New Jersey-based software licensing agent, applauded the introduction of Terranova Express. "It allows us to move in an entirely new direction for delivering software to our clients," Popolo said. "Several of our larger customers have already expressed an interest in the advantages which Terranova Express provides. They are looking for speed and efficiency in providing software to their employees, to maximize productivity.

Lucent plans to partner with licensing agents to implement Terranova Express.
