Business Wire, March 12, 1997
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 12, 1997-- Cellular One in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area and the Wireless Data Division of AT&T Wireless Services today announced the commercial availability of AT&T Wireless Packet Data Service (known in the industry as Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) or Wireless IP) and AT&T PocketNet service to Bay Area customers.
For as little as $19 a month, customers can have wireless access to corporate, public and personal information from their laptop computers or other mobile computing devices equipped with a CDPD-compatible modem. Wireless IP is a cost-effective means of wireless data transmission for applications such as e-mail, dispatch, data entry, credit card verification, and telemetry.
"With a focus on customers and the wireless communications solutions that meet their needs, we are pleased to be able to add wireless data to our expanding portfolio of products and services," said Sue Swenson, president and CEO of Cellular One of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. "Cellular One customers benefit from the technology leadership of AT&T Wireless Services and the extensive reach of its national network."
AT&T Wireless Packet Data Service
AT&T Wireless Packet Data Service separates the data into packets and transmits it over the cellular network in high speed bursts. The service is well-suited as a wireless extension to certain Internet and Intranet applications because it is based on the industry standard Internet Protocol (IP).
AT&T Wireless Packet Data Service charges customers for each kilobyte of data they send or receive over the wireless IP network. Customers can choose from one of four service plans covering increasing levels of usage per month. Each service plan requires signing a standard services agreement and includes a base monthly fee and a monthly kilobyte allowance. The four service plans range from $19 per month with a 200 KB allowance, to $115 per month with a 4,000 KB allowance.
AT&T PocketNet Service for Business
AT&T PocketNet Service for business is an easy and convenient way for companies to have mobile access to corporate information and e-mail via the AT&T PocketNet Phone and other PocketNet Service-compatible cellular phones, including Mitsubishi's MobileAccess Phone and Samsung's Duett. For $40 a month, users of AT&T PocketNet service for business get a PocketNet e-mail account and custom e-mail address, a 500-kilobyte allowance of data transactions and 20 fax pages per month.(a)
Cellular One customers will be able to use AT&T Wireless Packet Data Service and AT&T PocketNet service in more than 70 markets across the country, including New York, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Chicago, Boston, and Detroit. Users will be charged the same rates whether they are using the service in an AT&T-owned market or another carriers market where AT&T Wireless Packet Data Service can be used by virtue of an intercarrier agreement or a partnership agreement.
"We are very excited to join forces with Cellular One to bring AT&T Wireless Packet Data Service to Bay Area customers," said Anne Gordon, vice president of marketing and sales for AT&T Wireless Services, Wireless Data Division. "Accessibility and communications are critically important for businesses and our services allow employees to respond to e-mails, tap into corporate databases or file reports while they're out of the office, significantly improving their overall productivity."
