Tally Systems' NetCensus Identifies Repairs to Security Flaws in MS Internet Explorer Web Browser
Business Wire, March 13, 1997
HANOVER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 1997--The local product recognition feature of NetCensus, the PC inventory product from Tally Systems, not only allows users to define local recognition for internally developed applications but also detect the installation of the patch correcting the security flaws in Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Last week, one of the most popular web browsers on the market, Microsoft Internet Explorer, had a security leak. Individuals could bypass Explorer's security and tamper with the systems that are the day-to-day responsibility of system administrators. An already full schedule of maintenance and troubleshooting just got fuller -- the company CEO just read about a patch for the flaw in Investor's Business Daily and wants to know what MIS is doing about it, today.
The problem: System administrators may not know where or even if the easily downloaded browser software is installed somewhere on their network. Nor can they tell if patch has been installed or not, leaving the network vulnerable to exploitation. The solution to this problem is all in a day's work for NetCensus.
"NetCensus already automatically recognizes the affected versions of Internet Explorer," said George Lucke, System Administrator for Tally Systems. "It was easy to add recognition for the patch. We've already scanned the network, identified affected installations of Explorer, and applied the patch. If someone installs an unpatched version now, we'll know it."
"That's the beauty of NetCensus," said Randy Britton, Manager of Product Recognition. "We update recognition for our customers every two months, but when something like this comes up, there's a lot of flexibility. If a locally developed product isn't recognized or, in this case, you need to know if a really important patch has been applied, NetCensus can handle it."
Tally Systems' Product Recognition Department has identified a method to immediately utilize NetCensus to identify if the patch to Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0 and 3.01 for Windows 95/NT has been applied.
