Time Warner and Century Communications in joint cable modem venture

Business Wire, March 17, 1997

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 17, 1997--

Agreement Calls For Initial Roll-out of

Road Runner Service in Norwich, NY

Time Warner announced today that it had reached an agreement in principle to pursue a venture with Century Communications Corp. to work together to deploy the Road Runner high-speed cable modem service in Century cable systems. The first Century property to receive the service will be the Norwich, New York system.

Time Warner has consistently pursued an aggressive subscriber acquisition campaign for its Road Runner service since its initial debut in Akron, Ohio in September 1996. Its roll-out strategy includes targeting 10 additional Time Warner Cable divisions for deployment in 1997; developing regional hubs in close proximity to Time Warner properties that can distribute the Road Runner service to adjacent cable operators, and providing its national content to other MSO's that operate cable modem businesses. The launch on Century's Norwich, New York system will leverage existing Road Runner infrastructure by becoming a regional hub of Time Warner Cable's Binghamton division.

"We are delighted to work in partnership with Century Communications to roll-out Road Runner," said Tim Evard, President of the Excalibur Group, which developed Road Runner. "We believe the cable modem business is a regional one", he continued. "By extending the reach of Road Runner to markets adjacent to those where we have installed the necessary infrastructure and hardware, affiliate partners can reap the benefits of a lower cost entry investment and leverage skilled personnel resources."

The Century agreement contemplates that functions within its scope could include; the joint creation of an architectural plan for the implementation of a technical infrastructure; the selection of a technical platform, user interfaces, browsers and other navigational tools; the provision of national, international, and general interest content, as well as other support services that can be licensed to other cable operators adjacent to Century systems.

"We are pleased to be working with The Excalibur Group to launch the Road Runner service in Norwich," said Bernard P. Gallagher, President and Chief Operating Officer of Century Communications Corp. "Their cable modem experience is invaluable to us as we enter this new and exciting business."

Time Warner has launched the Road Runner service in three markets to date, Akron/Canton, Ohio, Binghamton/Elmira/Corning, New York and San Diego, California. In addition the company has announced plans to deploy in Portland, Maine on April 2, in Albany, New York in June, and Columbus, Ohio later in the summer. The company projects that it will be passing 4.5 million homes by the end of the year.

To extend the reach of Road Runner's national content, the company contracted with Cablevision Systems last December to include Road Runner on its Optimum Online service Road Runner was developed by the Excalibur Group, a joint venture between Time Warner Cable and Time Inc. Time Warner Cable is the nation's second largest cable television operator, currently serving, with affiliated companies, 12.3 million customers in 37 states. It is a unit of Time Warner Entertainment Company, L.P. Time Inc. is the world's preeminent magazine publisher; a leading marketer of books, music and video; and a provider of content for the new media environment.

Century Communications Corp. (NASDAQ Symbol: CTYA) owns and operates 70 cable television systems in 25 states and Puerto Rico serving in excess of 1,250,000 basic subscribers and owns and operates 4 radio stations. Century, through its 31.8% owned subsidiary, Centennial Cellular Corp. (NASDAQ: CYCL), owns, operates and invests in cellular telephone systems throughout the United States.
