HP eases the pain of disaster recovery for desktop users
Business Wire, May 1, 1997
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 1997--Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that it is bundling new, improved software with its industry-leading HP Colorado tape drives. The HP Colorado T3000 and T4000 tape drives come complete with Computer Associate's (CA) Colorado Backup for Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 95 by Cheyenne, making HP's the first total bundled solution on the market to provide full system protection in the event of a crash.
A system crash can be a catastrophic event for any user. The new HP Colorado solution helps minimize the pain of downtime by reducing the time and effort required to recover the system. Businesses are expected to be able to reduce downtime from hours to minutes.
"This new feature goes a long way toward taking the pain out of data restores for users in disaster recovery situations," said Jeff Pieterick, marketing manager at HP's Loveland Tape Operations. "HP has always been a leader in complete tape backup solutions from the desktop to the enterprise network. This bundle with Colorado Backup for Microsoft Windows 95 by Cheyenne is yet another milestone in maintaining HP's leadership position."
The new software also includes a cataloguing feature that allows users to track their data, eliminating the time wasted searching for an important file. It also allows users to quickly locate files for restore by keeping a database of all files backed up to all tapes. The new features are the result of a collaborative effort between HP and Cheyenne software.
"PC users have long recognized the storage value and reliability of HP's Colorado tape backup solutions," said Beau Roberts, CA product manager. "By partnering with HP, CA has provided Colorado tape-drive customers with an excellent backup solution that makes desktop data recovery a snap and minimizes the effort associated with backing up their data."
HP believes that Microsoft Windows '95 will account for a large percentage of 1997 OS shipments to small businesses. These businesses generally run without dedicated MIS support people and, as such, are especially prone to system corruption from disk crashes, virus infections or other catastrophic data-damaging events.
Colorado Backup for Microsoft Windows 95 by Cheyenne, which began shipping with HP Colorado tape drives last month, works with any earlier Colorado Memory tape drives, including all Jumbo and Trakker brand products. The software also works with all other Travan and DAT products from HP, including the DDS-3 HP SureStore DAT24 tape drive announced in March.
AVAILABILITY
The software will come bundled at no extra cost with new drives shipping today and is available to users of older Colorado Memory drives who want to order it as an upgrade by telephone. A special-offer coupon has been shipping with HP Colorado tape drives since February 1 that allows purchasers to get the upgrade for a specially discounted price. The number to call for an upgrade is 800/810-0133.
HP's Information Storage Group, which focuses on the rapidly growing extended-storage market, manufactures and sells information-storage products based on tape, magneto-optical and CD technologies. HP storage solutions include digital-audio-tape (DAT) drives and digital-linear-tape (DLT) libraries, minicartridge (QIC) tape drives and software, CD-writeable drives, and magneto-optical drives and jukeboxes. These products are sold through a variety of distribution channels under the HP SureStore and HP Colorado brand names, as well as to OEM customers.
