Verilink Granted Patent for Programmable Architecture of Access System 2000; Verilink's Programmable Architecture Enables Access System 2000 to Change Hardware Functionality

Business Wire, May 12, 1997

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 12, 1997--Verilink Corporation (NASDAQ:VRLK), a leading provider of integrated-access solutions, today announced that it has been granted a U.S. patent for its Advanced Programmable Architecture.

This architecture enables the company's Access System 2000 integrated access device to be reprogrammed to accommodate the changing needs of the wide-area network.

The United States Patent Office issued the patent, U.S. patent number 5,613,061, to Verilink Corporation. The principal inventor was Steven C. Taylor, Verilink's co-founder and chief technical officer.

"This patent reflects the significance of the scalability and flexibility of the Access System 2000 integrated access solution that is finding growing acceptance among carriers, network service providers and Fortune 1000 companies," said Lws our customers to get the most functionality out of their investment and gives Verilink a competitive edgewitching, transmission test and analysis, encryption processing and ISDN Primary Rate Interface.

The patent specifically covers the reprogrammable architecture that enables the AS2000 hardware to change from a Channel Service Unit (CSU) into network analysis equipment to respond to the immediate needs of the network. For example, once an alarm goes off on the CSU, the network administrator can simply click on a button and remotely change any CSU located on the wide-area network into analysis equipment and test the WAN facilities or data equipment for problems.

"Transferring data over the public network requires many functions to set up and tear down a call," said Steven Taylor. "With the reprogrammable architecture of the Access System 2000, Verilink provides many of those functions on the same hardware, saving space and investment over multiple-vendor equipment."

Verilink's Integrated Access Device (IAD)

Leveraging its scalable architecture, Verilink's Access System 2000 can add bandwidth and accommodate various transmission speeds to address users' ever-increasing access requirements. The architectural design of the solution gives customers the ability to deploy and migrate from narrowband through broadband services such as ISDN, SMDS, Frame Relay and ATM, all within a single platform. Verilink is ISO9001 certified.

The Access System 2000 of over 100 years.
