Telus and Octel Communications Sign Multimillion-Dollar Deal to Expand Voice Messaging in Alberta, Canada
Business Wire, May 13, 1997
MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 13, 1997--Octel Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: OCTL), the world's leading provider of voice messaging technology, and Telus Corporation, Canada's third largest telecommunications and information management services company, today announced a deal to enhance and expand the existing voice messaging services offered to the Alberta province by Telus.
Over a two year period, Telus will invest $3 million to purchase several Octel Sierra servers, allowing the company to increase its network capacity and offer its existing customers more message storage space, enabling them to leave longer messages, as well as new options such as sending pre-scheduled voice greetings or group messages to a pre-set list. Telus also plans to use Octel technology to create a virtual voice messaging service for cellular customers.
"As a telecommunications service provider, we are always looking for ways to help our customers communicate more efficiently," said Jeff Welke, Telus' manager of corporate communications. "By selecting Octel's state-of-the-art technology, we can create new and enhanced services specifically designed to meet the demands of our market."
"The addition of voice mail and applications, such as sending group voice messages to a pre-programmed list, illustrates the voice messaging maturity of the Canadian market," said Margaret Norton, senior vice president of Octel's Voice Information Services business unit. "Octel is pleased to help Telus enhance the way Albertans communicate."
Designed for high-capacity, high-traffic service provider environments, Octel's Sierra server is the best-selling voice network server on the market today because it allows telecommunications companies to offer a wide range of income generating services -- from basic telephone answering to voice messaging, fax services, message delivery and notification.
