Intel expands family of mobile Pentium processors with MMX technology; New 133MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology offers notebook consumers value and performance
Business Wire, May 19, 1997
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 19, 1997--Intel Corp. today expanded its line of mobile processors with MMX(TM) media enhancement technology with the introduction of a 133-MHz Pentium(R) processor with MMX technology for the notebook segment.
Available now, the new 133-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology enables mobile PC users to enjoy the benefits of Intel's MMX technology at attractive system price points.
"Intel's new 133-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology enables value-conscious notebook users to take advantage of better overall performance, enhanced communications, and high-quality graphics, video and sound while working at home, in the office or on the road," said Frank Spindler, director of marketing, Intel's Mobile and Handheld Products Group.
The 133-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology rounds-out Intel's family of mobile products, which includes 166-MHz and 150-MHz Pentium processors with MMX technology currently shipping in high-end and mid-range notebooks.
Whether using software-based video and 3D graphics to enhance a business presentation, accessing media rich content on the Internet, or conducting video conferencing over standard telephone lines, notebook users benefit from the improved performance capabilities of Intel's MMX technology.
In addition, the larger 16Kbyte on chip cache and other architectural enhancements improve the processor's performance when running existing software applications such as office suites.
Intel's MMX Media Enhancement Technology
Introduced in January of this year, the 150-MHz and 166-MHz Pentium processors with MMX technology were the first mobile products to incorporate Intel's new set of 57 instructions that enable MMX technology features and functionality.
MMX technology allows the CPU to process certain types of data typically found in multimedia and graphics software simultaneously. The resulting accelerated performance on media-rich applications provides such features as life-like color, full-screen video and graphics, real-time animation, and 3D audio.
Built on Intel's enhanced 0.35 micron CMOS process technology, the 133-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology delivers high performance with low power consumption, providing an ideal engine for the mobile PC platform. The 133-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology runs 10-20 percent faster than the same speed Pentium processor based on standard benchmarks.
Additionally, the 133-MHz Pentium with MMX technology posts a 65 percent boost in system performance when compared with an equivalent speed Pentium processor running on Intel's Media Benchmark. This benchmark, which consists of audio, video, imaging and 3D geometry components, measures system performance on media-rich applications.
Product Pricing
In 1,000-unit quantities, the 133-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology is priced at $284.
Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of personal computer, networking and communications products. Additional information is available at www.intel.com/pressroom .
