Hitachi includes ART's notepad software solution in its new handheld PC

Business Wire, May 29, 1997

CHATSWORTH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 29, 1997--Advanced Recognition Technologies Inc. (ART), a developer of technologically superior speech and handwriting recognition engines, today announced the inclusion of its smARTscribble into the free software bundle of Hitachis new line of handheld PCs.

smARTscribble for Windows CE allows users of the new Hitachi HPW-10E Handheld PCs the ability to write freehand images directly on the screen and save them as files or use them in documents.

"Including smARTscribble in the software bundle enables full use of the touch panel feature of the Hitachi Handheld PC," says Hitachi general manager Ken Hasegawa. "ART's software offers the benefits of saving drawings, maps and symbols in bitmap format and sending them by email or adding them to documents."

smARTscribble captures images exactly as the user writes or draws them on the HPC screen. This allows users to save maps, thumbnail sketches and signatures, all of which can be added to a Pocket Word document, or any other application running on the Handheld PC. The program also allows the images to be saved in bit map (BMP) format for ease in sending to others or other applications.

Hitachi has begun shipping three models of the Hitachi HPW-10E nationwide at Staples and Frys. The Hitachi Handheld PCs will feature a larger screen, lighter weight and a compact and easy-to-type keyboard, with easy operation and functionality employing popular Windows 95-based applications software.

The Hitachi units are priced (suggested retail price) at $599.95 for the 4MB version (HPW-10E4), and $699.95 for the 4MB version with built-in 28.8 modem (HPW-10E4MB).

ART has gained notoriety in the handwriting recognition business with its smARTwriter handwriting recognition software package. smARTwriter for Windows CE is a powerful, accurate software solution that allows users to launch applications, control programs and enter data or words into popular applications such as Pocket Word and Pocket Excel.

smARTwriter and smARTscribble for Windows CE are available now through the smARTshop page on the ART website, located at http://www.artcomp.com . smARTwriter for Windows CE is priced at $49.95. smARTscribble is available for $29.95.
