Business Wire, Oct 14, 1997

RESTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 14, 1997--SpaceVest, the space industry's leading venture capital firm, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with NASA. Under the agreement, the two organizations will cooperate on a variety of initiatives to enhance the commercial attractiveness of space industry businesses.

"As a pioneer in the investment of private equity in commercially oriented space industry companies, SpaceVest is clearly focused on business issues," said NASA administrator Daniel Goldin. "Public/private initiatives are critical to the successful commercialization of space. SpaceVest's experience will help NASA develop and implement such initiatives and facilitate significant commercial development."

The MOU allows NASA to access SpaceVest's expertise in finance, investment, and risk management as the space agency expands its commercialization programs. In addition, the two organizations have agreed to share non-proprietary data on the global space industry. Finally, the agreement allows for coordinated development and implementation of financial initiatives to promote commercialization and commercial use of NASA-funded facilities, technology, and resources.

"This agreement reflects NASA's commitment to supporting successful space commercialization," said John Higginbotham, SpaceVest's president and managing general partner. "We look forward to working together with NASA to develop mechanisms that can help us increase the availability of private capital for space industry companies."

SpaceVest, a unique private equity organization supported by leading financial institutions, focuses on developing companies involved in space-related applications in a broad array of markets. These applications include wireless telecommunications, local loop telephony, positioning systems, advanced satellite remote sensing, geographical information systems, telemedicine, advanced security systems, software tools, and other high-growth areas.
