Hyundai Standardizes on Informix for Global, Enterprise Data Warehouse, Data Marts and Internet Applications
Business Wire, Oct 23, 1997
MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 23, 1997--
Auto Maker In Production on Informix High-Performance Scalable
Database Technology
Informix Software, Inc., (NASDAQ:IFMXE), the leading provider of innovative database technology, today announced that Hyundai Motor Co. is powering its 600-gigabyte data warehouse -- the largest of its kind by a Korean manufacturer -- with Informix database software and ROLAP tools, and that the auto maker is standardizing its integrated enterprise data warehouse, data marts and Internet applications on Informix technology.
The contract with Hyundai, which was signed in June, is expected to be worth more than $1 million.
With Informix databases now in production, Hyundai is creating an enterprise data warehouse with architected data marts so that all corporate data can be freely shared and analyzed throughout the company. The win for Hyundai's enterprise warehouse -- over Oracle, IBM and Teradata -- is an endorsement of the company's INFORMIX(R)-OnLine Extended Parallel Server (OnLine XPS), which has achieved record- breaking TPC-D benchmarks in the industry, including on SMP, clusters, NUMA and MPP machines.
In addition, Hyundai chose INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server(TM), Informix's flagship database product, for the deployment of its data marts, which is being constructed simultaneously with its enterprise data warehouse on an IBM SP2 MPP system.
It also selected as its standard Relational OnLine Analytical Processing (ROLAP) engine and tools the INFORMIX-MetaCube(TM) product suite. With the INFORMIX-MetaCube product suite, Hyundai employees can analyze and correlate data wherever it resides -- in different department data marts or the enterprise data warehouse -- thereby fully leveraging all of the company's information for competitive advantage. Hyundai's 200 MetaCube users are expected to expand to 1500 next year.
In searching for the right partner for its ambitious corporate-wide data warehousing project -- which will be accomplished by migrating its legacy mainframe data to an IBM UNIX server -- Hyundai partnered with Informix because of "the excellence of the Informix database architecture optimized for various hardware platforms, and the clear superiority of its data warehouse technology," according to Mr. Sohn, DongSeong, program manager of the project at Hyundai Motor Co.
Hyundai anticipates significant productivity gains will come from integrating enterprise-wide data -- including customer, order and claims information -- into a massive data warehouse. "Enterprise level data integration will contribute to enhancement of data quality. Increases in employee productivity will result in substantial savings per person," said Mr. Sohn, DongSeong at Hyundai. "This will allow more time for the collection of new business information, improving IT's ability to contribute to the bottom line and increase our competitiveness." Hyundai plans to build five additional data warehouses by next year.
Mr. Lee, SungSoon, Informix's data warehousing sales manager in Korea, said the Hyundai project is the largest of its new 1997 data warehousing partnerships with Korean customers, which include Ssangbangul, a local clothing company, and Ssangyong Fire & Marine Insurance Company. "Our success is due to the fact that Informix and its partners have the most complete, highest-performance data warehouse solution, including superior customer service and technical support."
"Importantly, we also have the best price/performance compared to Teradata, DB2, Microsoft, Sybase and Oracle -- and with XPS, we have never lost a data warehousing customer benchmark to those competitors," Lee said.
