PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 1997--The New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) will install 896 Sun Microsystems, Inc. JavaStation network computers across the state in November 1997.
The JavaStation network computers will be installed in 131 motor registries and 35 corporate access points. Clusters of between two and 25 JavaStation network computers will be networked within the registries and corporate areas to 165 SPARC 5 servers already installed.
The introduction of JavaStation network computers facilitates delivery of "lookalike" access to the RTA's driver license and vehicle registration evelop applications that support and deliver sibility.
The RTA aims to increase the levrange of services for our customers," said McMullan.
The Sun Microsystems JavaStation is a thin client desktop that employs modern technologies such as intranets, web protocols, the Java language/runtime environment, and Sun's high-quality workstation designs to provide users with a Java-based "window" into the computing enterprise. reside on centralized servers for ease of administration. The JavaStation thus provides organizations with a modern alternative to traditional fat clients, and form The JavaStation network computer will replace a network of Intel 286 PC's being used as point-of-sale terminals. These PCs function as network computers; they have no disk drives and all applications load off the SPARC 5 local UNIX servers.
The RTA regarded it as necessary to retain the zero administration configuration it had implemented with the POS PC terminals and has achieved this with the installation of Sun's JavaStation network computer.
"The introduction of Java also solves a growing problem we have had with the inflexibility of DOS and with obtaining staff to support the current DOS applications because programmers want to move on to more modern languages," said McMullan.
The RTA chose Sun Microsystems for the project after a careful and exhaustive investigation of the network computer market. Sun was selected because it offered the best solution and was competitively priced.
Initially, the JavaStation network computers will provide access to the driver license and vehicle registration systemr of hardware, software and services for estabMicrosystems, Inc. in the United States and othon, 650/596-2700 ext. 224
