Sun Takes Web Warehousing to New Heights with 100 Percent Pure Java Decision Support Solutions

Business Wire, Oct 7, 1997

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 1997--Companies are increasingly embracing Java(TM) software and its promise of "Write Once, Run Anywhere (TM)" for mission-critical, data warehouse applications, as evidenced by Sun Microsystems, Inc.'s announcement today that seven decision support products have received 100% Pure Java (TM) certification from JavaSoft. The applications include SpaceOLAP Designer 1.0 and Space SQL 2.0 from Infospace, Inc.; dbProbe 2.0 from InterNetivity; IQ/WebReports from IQ Software; Seagate Crystal Reports Smart Viewer for Java from Seagate Software and ReportMart 1.0 and WebSQRIBE 1.0 from SQRIBE Technologies. With Java software, companies can build a Web warehouse that users can access with any Java-enabled browser.

"Java is ushering in a new era in the development of decision support applications and web warehousing. Customers are able to protect current product investments, while continuing to grow and advance with new technologies," said Rod Tansimore, worldwide manager for data warehousing and decision support for Sun Microsystems. "By developing applications with the Java computing environment, customers are ensured complete platform independence."

"If companies want to leverage and extend their data warehousing investments across their entire enterprise, Java is the only way to go," said Stan Wang, president and chief executive officer of Infospace, Inc. "Today's IT landscape is not homogeneous, and customers have collected a mix of systems and hardware. 100% Pure Java means they can instantly deploy applications across the Web that have been written once and will run anywhere, saving them thousands of dollars per client per year in administration costs."

Java Web Warehousing

Web warehousing with Java software exceeds the ease and access to the warehouse throughout the corporate enterprise. Utilizing Java software, decision support tools are made reliably available to every decision maker in the organization in a cost effective manner. Going a step beyond traditional "stateless" Web communications, Java enables the user to download a decision support application from the server and manipulate the data locally.

"We see Java as being important because it delivers a platform independent solution enabling intranet and extranet users to retrieve report output or dynamically execute reports via any standard Web browser, said Michael Gaiss, vice president of marketing for IQ Software. "This is essential from our standpoint of delivering enterprise deployable solutions.

100% Pure Java

The 100% Pure Java initiative is an industry-wide campaign to help software developers create, test, certify, market and sell 100 percent Pure Java applications. Over 100 Java applications have been submitted to the 100% Pure Java testing and certification process since the unveiling of the program at this year's JaveOne (SM), Sun's worldwide Java (TM) Developer Conference (SM).
