INTELSAT Uses Celcore System for Wireless Local Loop Pilot Trial; Satellite Giant Integrates VSAT-DAMA Technology With Cellular System

Business Wire, Sept 15, 1997

MEMPHIS, Tenn--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 15, 1997--Cellular system supplier Celcore, Inc. announced today that it has supplied INTELSAT with a Wireless Local Loop (WLL) system that includes a Celcore GlobalSwitch(tm) MSC-8, AMPS GlobalCell(tm) Series I base station and a Network Management System. The Celcore system was successfully integrated with Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) - Demand Assigned Multiple Access (DAMA) equipment at INTELSAT's headquarters facility in Washington, D.C. INTELSAT plans to demonstrate a WLL application with connection to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) via DAMA in a forthcoming field trial.

The application created by the unique combination of INTELSAT's VSAT DAMA service and Celcore's cellular system is a possible solution for the rapid deployment of wireless telephone services in remote and rural areas. VSAT-DAMA technology provides a cost-effective and efficient way to link multiple locations across a large geographical area, where traditional terrestrial transmission networks such as copper, fiber, or microwave may be too expensive or non-existent, allowing telephone services to be deployed virtually anywhere in the world.

"We are very pleased to be selected to provide wireless local loop solutions with the unique combination of VSAT DAMA and cellular technology," said Tom Berger, President and Chief Operating Officer of Celcore. "With INTELSAT's worldwide presence and global customer base, this opportunity can further strengthen Celcore's position as a supplier for emerging markets," he added.

The INTELSAT cooperative owns and operates the world's most extensive global communications satellite system. With 1996 revenues of over U.S. $910 million, the INTELSAT system provides voice/data and video services to over 200 countries around the globe.
