MapInfo Corporation announces plans for SpatialWare Extender for IBM's DB2 Universal Database
Business Wire, Sept 16, 1997
TROY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 1997--MapInfo Corporation (NASDAQ:MAPS) today announced plans to support DB2 Universal Database with a SpatialWare Extender which will allow DB2 users to directly access geographic spatial information from a single database source. DB2 Universal Database allows the storage and handling of complex data types within the relational database. Using DB2 and SpatialWare, an organization's spatial and alphanumeric data can coexist within the same database environment, ensuring that security, privacy, updates, backups and recovery procedures for both data types are synchronized.
"This relationship with IBM supports MapInfo's strategy to integrate its new products and technologies in powerful enterprise-wide solutions, allowing businesses to empower their databases with the benefits of spatial technologies like geographic analysis," said John Cavalier, MapInfo president and CEO. "This opens up many exciting possibilities for both of our companies."
SpatialWare is the MapInfo server technology that stores and manages complex spatial data in corporate relational database servers for ISO SQL3-based spatial querying. With it, users are able to instantly incorporate mapping for visualization and analysis within enterprise applications and data warehouse environments to support critical business decisions. SpatialWare eliminates the need to maintain spatial data separately from corporate relational databases.
"Extending applications to support geospatial data is very important to a number of our customers," said Tom Kendra, vice president, Data Management Marketing, IBM Software Solutions Division. "We are pleased to work with MapInfo as the demand for these solutions grows. Their technology coupled with DB2 Universal Database is a winning combination."
Spatial analysis is being used in telecommunications, utilities, financial and government to enhance business decisions and improve market opportunities. As one example, a long distance telephone company can now provide each department with server-based mapping tools to gain competitive advantage. Corporate data can be spatially analyzed by the company's customer service department to provide callers with critical information on service outages or areas where additional services will be expanded. The company's revenue figures for each area code, the location of their fiber network, competitor and demographic information for any specific region can similarly be analyzed by the business development department before recommending where the company should enter a new market. The results of each department's analysis can then be shared across the organization.
"Storing fiber optic location data in our DB2 production systems will have corporate wide benefits," said Steve Brandenberg, CIO of McLeodUSA Inc., an Iowa based provider of integrated telecommunications services to businesses and residential customers. "We already have been using MapInfo-based desktop technologies to document and manage over 3,000 miles of fiber. With SQL integration and access of that spatial data, we will be able to enhance many of our operational systems, resulting in improved customer service and reduced operating expenses."
Initial shipment of SpatialWare on DB2 Universal Database for AIX is slated for First Quarter 1998.
