HP Delivers Best Web Infrastructure for Internet Application Deployment; Enhances HP-UX 11 64-bit Operating Environment for Web-based Computing

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 1997--Hewlett- Packard Company today announced major Web enhancements to its industry-leading 64-bit operating environment, HP-UX(1) 11, that make it easier for customers to deploy high-performance, highly available Internet, intranet and extranet applications.

"HP-UX 11 has been optimized to address customers' rapidly changing needs in Internet and enterprise computing," said Carol G. Mills, general manager of HP's Enterprise Systems Division. "With improved performance, quality of service, security and manageability, HP delivers advanced Web connectivity."

New Web features include the following: -0-

    -- enhanced Java support, including a kernel-threaded Java
       virtual machine with a just-in-time compiler, that delivers
       near-linear scaling across all HP 9000 Enterprise and HP
       Domain platforms, including the new 16-way V-Class Server,
       and can increase Java performance dramatically, depending
       on the number of CPUs used; easy-to-use Java Web-based
       management with "manage-anywhere" capabilities for the
       enterprise administrator;

    -- improved quality of service for such new high-bandwidth
       applications as multimedia using resource reservation
       protocol (RSVP) to reserve bandwidth for internet protocol
       (IP) traffic;

    -- IPSec, an IP security feature that provides transparent
       encryption for IP-based applications, secures information
       between parties over private intranets and the public
       Internet, and requires no application coding;

    -- IP version 6 support, which increases address size from 32
       bits to 128 bits, expanding the total number of available IP
       addresses and helping support global Internet growth;

    -- IP multicasting, which provides subscription messaging that
       more efficiently supports emerging push-based applications for
       information sharing;

    -- IP aliasing, which allows multiple IP addresses from different
       subnets and networks to be supported within a single system,
       giving Internet-service providers the flexibility to offer
       hosted services for different companies on a single platform;
       and

    -- SendMail version 8.8, an anti-spam capability that filters
       junk mail from the server.
