Sun Announces Availability of Sybase's Adaptive Server Enterprise 11.5 on Sun's Ultra Enterprise Servers; Sun, Sybase Deliver High Scalability, Availability and Industry Leading Performance for Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 11.5

Business Wire, Sept 16, 1997

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 1997--Sun Microsystems Inc. today announced availability of Sybase's new Adaptive Server Enterprise 11.5,on Sun's scalable Enterprise(TM) server family, running the Solaris(TM) operating environment.

Sybase's Adaptive Server Enterprise 11.5,developed on the Sun(TM) Solaris platform, is an on-line transaction processing and decision support database optimized to deliver predictable high-performance in unpredictable, mixed-workload environments.

Marking a long-standing relationship, Sybase continues to choose Sun as a primary development platform ensuring joint customers the best performance and the earliest access to Sybase's products and features. The Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 11.5 is currently scheduled for general availability on the entire range of Sun's Enterprise server family.

Adaptive Server Enterprise 11.5 is the first member of Sybase's Adaptive Server family. Sybase's innovative architecture provides customers a multi-tier framework in which to design, develop and deploy mission-critical business applications on any tier -- the client, mid-tier or back-end database. Adaptive Server Enterprise 11.5 is the first database product available that provides component support to all tiers. Deployed on Sun's line of Enterprise servers running the robust Solaris operating environment, the Sun and Sybase solution provide leading system performance, scalability and availability for applications that require demanding on-line transaction processing and decision support.

Flexible Multifunction, Mixed Work Load Support

The Sun, Sybase enterprise solution consistently offers higher performance levels for the unpredictable, mixed workload environment. The Adaptive Server Enterprise 11.5 provides parallel processing features designed to use large multi-processing servers for maximum performance when running OLTP and decision support on a single system.

Sun's Enterprise servers are the industry's most scalable symmetric multi-processing (SMP) systems with up to 64 processors in a single node. Together, the Sun and Sybase solution can support consistent response levels in such applications as electronic commerce where thousands of users may go on-line at any given time.

"The innovative parallel processing features of Sybase's Adaptive Enterprise Server 11.5 are a perfect match for Sun's multi-processing Enterprise servers," said Mark Tolliver, vice president Market Development, Sun Microsystems Computer Company. "By combining the power of Sun's servers with Sybase technology, we can ensure leading scalable and advanced solutions for the enterprise."

"As the computing environment has evolved over the last dozen years, Sun and Sybase have collaborated to meet our customers' ever increasing computing requirements," said Terry Stepien, vice president of Database Marketing, Sybase Inc. "With Adaptive Enterprise Server 11.5 running on Sun's platform, we achieve yet another milestone in delivering maximum performance for critical applications."

Performance

Sun has recently completed two benchmarks on its Enterprise servers for Adaptive Enterprise Server 11.5 which underscore its industry leading performance. For example, Sun's Enterprise 450 workgroup server running the Solaris operating environment posted record-breaking performance results for its class of systems on the Transaction Processing Performance Council C (TPC-C) benchmark with a performance rate of 11,559.70 TPC-C transactions per minute (tpmC) at a price/performance of $56.60 per tpmC.
