NSI Com Signs License Agreement with Sun Microsystems for providing the Software Co-Processor for Java to the Embedded Market
Business Wire, Sept 29, 1997
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 29, 1997--
NSI Com today announced that it has signed an agreement with Sun
Microsystems
Under this agreement, NSI Com will sell its family of binary products called JSCP - Software Co-Processor for Java(TM), to both Sun licensees and non-licensees in the Embedded market. In addition, Sun and NSI Com will engage in joint marketing of the Java technology and NSI Com's Java(TM)-related products in specific industries and territories.
This relationship establishes NSI Com as a technology vendor-of-choice for the EmbeddedJavaOS in the embedded market. NSI Com is the first software company to engage in an agreement with Sun, allowing for the implementation of Java in a co-processing environment for embedded systems.

JSCP description
JSCP, the Software Co-Processor for Java, is a family of products specifically designed for implementing and porting of EmbeddedJavaOS to Embedded Devices. JSCP uses NSI's unique encapsulation technique for providing an effective isolation between the Java and the non-Java threads. This isolation is extremely important for providing the high degree of robustness required by the embedded devices, and in particular for those resource-limited. JSCP provides most of the OS services for Java on the designated CPU, instead of acting as an 'interface' between the native OS and Java programs. JSCP behaves as an additional "operating system" on the CPU of the embedded system, so for the native OS, it appears as just one additional task. In such a single task, the JSCP provides multithreading, program scheduling and communications management. Using the encapsulation technique, the JSCP has a limited and well-defined effect on the real-time system. Thus, it will stay within the specified limits of memory size and CPU share-time and will not allow Java code to use more resources than allowed.
JSCP applications
The EmbeddedJavaOS provides a standard, uniform programming environment and enables loading and execution of network-based applications. These applications, sent over the network as byte-code "applets" are processed by the EmbeddedJavaOS. JSCP, the Software Co-Processor for Java, is used for implementing the EmbeddedJavaOS on embedded devices, such as Data Communications devices, PDAs, printers, and high-end telephones and cellular telephones, enabling them to benefit from Java advantages. NSI Com's agreement with Sun extends to both the existing and the future EmbeddedJava. This way, applications based on the existing versions of Java, could be extended when EmbeddedJava becomes available.
"Sun is excited that NSI Com has licensed the EmbeddedJavaOS technology and we are pleased to see today's announcement," said David Spenhoff, director of product marketing for Sun Microsystems' JavaSoft division. "NSI Com is providing a new framework for delivering applications to the telecommunications and data communications industries, including its first release, a policy-based application geared for network devices."
"NSI Com is providing exciting new opportunities for the proliferation of Java in the embedded market with its software co-processor," continued Spenhoff. "JSCP is an excellent choice for those customers who want to retain their existing software investment while adding new, advanced Java-based applications."
"NSI Com has the know-how and the expertise of implementing Java for its worldwide customers, thus improving their time-to-market, lowering their development costs, and enabling them to implement highly reliable Java based products. We are very pleased to be in a position to cooperate with Sun for enabling our customers to achieve these business goals," said Abraham Zahavy, general manager of NSI.
Availability
The Software Co-Processor for Java is available immediately from NSI Com, Sun and NSI's RTOS partners. Since it is a generic product, the JSCP has been already ported and implemented on a large number of platforms and can be adapted in a very short period of time to any additional Real Time OS, Kernel or Executive - public or proprietary, running on any suitable CPU platform. NSI Com support for the JSCP family of products is on a worldwide basis.
