Business Wire, Sept 4, 1997

BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 4, 1997-- Thinking Machines Corporation, a leading provider of advanced data mining applications serving the telecommunications and financial services industries, today announced Darwin 2.1, the latest version of its data mining solution for customers with very large databases.

Darwin 2.1 adds several new features, of which the most significant, is the ability to export predictive models in Java development language. This new feature will bring Darwin data mining to the World Wide Web for the first time. Darwin 2.1 will also export models in C and C , which will allow users to integrate data mining results into custom applications and/or embed them in SQL queries.

Other new features include the ability to read and write SAS files, faster and more robust data mining algorithms, the ability to export results into Microsoft Excel and a general importance/ sensitivity analysis feature which indicates the relative importance of attributes that are used to build a model.

"Our customers are eager to employ Darwin's powerful predictive technology to the Web," said Robert L. Doretti, president and CEO of Thinking Machines. "This new version will enable users to integrate prediction models into their own software environments, making Darwin easier to use with the operating system of their choice."

"We are using Darwin to help us determine customer attrition at a large Swiss bank. These new features will allow us to customize our applications and deliver recommendations quickly," said Laurence Jacobs, chief scientist at Knowledge Stream. "Thinking Machines has combined its powerful technology with new ease-of-use features -- it's a great improvement to what is already a technically-advanced data mining solution."

"Data mining has helped those companies that are committed to data warehousing achieve real return on investment and gain competitive advantage," said Chris Hamlin, director of strategic partnering and market development at dbINTELLECT Technologies, a division of EDS. "Its predictive capabilities allow corporations to understand customer behavior and respond with one-to-one strategic marketing programs."

Darwin 2.1 is priced starting at $30,000 for an annual usage fee, depending upon configuration, and is available immediately on the Sun Solaris platform. It will be available on HP and the IBM RS6000 platform by the end of the year.
