Data General Introduces First AViiON NT Servers Based On Intel Pentium II Xeon Processors; Strengthens NT Departmental Server Line and Award-Winning NT Cluster in-a-Box
Business Wire, August 10, 1998
WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 10, 1998--Data General Corporation today introduced its first AViiON servers based on Intel Pentium II Xeon processors targeted at the Microsoft Windows NT Server enterprise market: the AV 3700 tower and the AV 3700R rackmounted departmental systems. The AV 3700R is also the basis for a new version of Data General's award-winning AViiON NT Cluster-in-a-Box(TM) high-availability package.
"The NT marketplace continues to be our fastest-growing server area," said David Flawn, vice president of NT Marketing at Data General. "These new systems combined with applications from our strategic software alliances and our extensive NT services portfolio enable us to deliver higher-valued solutions that meet our customers' business needs."
The AV 3700 has up to four 400-MHz Intel Pentium II Xeon processors, each with up to 1 MB L2 cache, and up to 4 GB of memory. Both the tower and the rackmounted version support seven I/O slots, plus three onboard SCSI channels and video board. The AV 3700R (rackmounted version of the AV 3700) can be configured with up to four servers. Each AV 3700 server can support up to 4.3 Terabytes of CLARiiON(R) Fibre Channel 5X00 Series disk arrays.
"Data General is the first to provide NT server users with the performance and high-availability features that full Fibre Channel-based storage systems can offer," said Mr. Flawn.
"in-a-Box" Packaging
The AV 3700R is also the basis for Data General's unique AViiON NT Cluster-in-a-Box high-availability package in a single rackmounted system. NT Cluster-in-a-Box consists of two AV 3700 servers running Microsoft Cluster Server, a fault-tolerant CLARiiON RAID storage system, the company's NTerprise Manager(TM) server management software, and NTAlert(SM) "call home" support tool.
"Data General was the first company to offer this innovative pre-assembled, pre-loaded, and pre-tested package for the NT market. The benefits for the customer are quite clear: minimized implementation risk with quick, trouble-free deployment of their applications and 7x24 protection, leading to faster return on their investment," said Mr. Flawn. "This focus on scalable and highly available NT servers and storage systems is right in step with Microsoft's strategy for the enterprise computing marketplace. We are actively working with them to deliver additional solutions to customers beyond the recently announced healthcare initiative."
Pricing and Availability
Estimated street price for the AV 3700 tower will start under $7,500, with the rackmounted version starting at an estimated street price under $8,000. Price includes three-year on-site warranty; NTerprise Manager server manager software including ManageX and NTAlert, a 10/100 LAN card, and a modem for "call home" service support. The AV 3700 and AV 3700R servers will start shipping within 30 days. P. In addition to Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 and Enterprise Edition, customers of AV 3700 servers will also be able to use Microsoft Terminal Server Edition, and Citrix WinFrame.
