Lycos, Tripod and iPrint.com Launch Innovative E-Commerce Print Shops; Companies Announce $2.25 - Million Dollar Alliance
Business Wire, August 24, 1998
WALTHAM, Mass. and MOFFETT FIELD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Aug. 24, 1998--Lycos, Inc. (NASDAQ:LCOS) (http://www.lycos.com), "Your Personal Internet Guide," and iPrint.com (http://www.iPrint.com), the leading online print shop, today announced a multi-year agreement establishing iPrint.com as the exclusive print shop on both the lycos.com and tripod.com Web sites. This marks the first broad-based electronic commerce alliance that will tap into the enormous $78 billion commercial printing marketplace.
"We've seen e-commerce revolutionize other retail areas such as books and music," said Robert J. Davis, president and CEO of Lycos, Inc. "The printing industry is a huge market that we feel has enormous potential for e-commerce as well. The relationship with iPrint will help introduce the speed and power of the Internet to printing, making the design and proofing processes quicker and easier than traditional printing methods."
The Lycos iPrint and Tripod iPrint Shops, as easy to use as a bank ATM, will offer consumers unlimited access to iPrint's award-winning online print shop. Print buyers will now be able to create, proof and order all popularly printed items, such as business cards, stationery, rubber stamps and personalized Post-it Notes, as well as a full line of gift items, including photo t-shirts, mouse pads and coffee cups.
"As with books and music, Internet consumers will find that creating and ordering printed products such as party invitations or photo real estate flyers is much more convenient and cost-effective online than through the traditional approach," stated Royal P. Farros, president and CEO of iPrint, Inc. "Since there is less reprint waste, and because we're completely electronic and automated, our prices are among the best in the country," added Farros.
The Lycos and Tripod iPrint Shops are both fully WYSIWYG (What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get), eliminating the guesswork that plagues traditional print shops. Reprint-due-to-error, an important measure of the reliability of printing services, is 15 times lower at iPrint than at a traditional print shop. The Lycos iPrint Shop is expected to go live this week. The Tripod iPrint Shop will open this fall. All print orders come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee from iPrint.
