IDT Introduces Industry's First 3.3-Volt, 100-MHz Synchronous FIFOs; Market Leader Continues to Advance FIFO Technology

Business Wire, August 24, 1998

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 24, 1998--IDT (NASDAQ:IDTI), the industry's leading supplier of first-in/first-out (FIFO) memories, today introduced the first 100-MHz FIFOs to operate at 3.3 volts. The new broad line of 3.3-volt, 100-MHz SyncFIFO(TM), DualSync(TM) and SuperSync(TM) FIFOs, which are available in densities up to 1 Mbit, provide faster system performance and greater throughput, making them ideal solutions for data-intensive datacom and telecom applications such as routers, switches, cellular base stations and SONET/ATM multiplexers. In addition, the new 3.3-volt devices are tolerant of 5-volt inputs.

"The introduction of our new 3.3-volt, 100-MHz FIFOs clearly demonstrates that IDT is continuing to lead the effort to advance FIFO technology," said Mario Montana, IDT's strategic marketing manager of FIFO products. "We offer the broadest range of FIFO products in the industry and will continue to work closely with our customers to deliver FIFOs that meet the density and performance requirements of future high-performance communications applications."

For data communications applications, such as ATM switches or gigabit ethernet routers, the new 100-MHz FIFOs can increase overall system performance by decoupling high-speed buses from slower buses, as well as perform data buffering tasks to reduce cell loss and maintain sufficient data throughput. Additionally, the FIFOs can hold packets as they wait for access to the switch fabric or an output line card, thereby reducing packet loss and improving quality of service to the end user. Independent read and write clocks allow simultaneous reading and writing within one clock cycle.

The new 3.3-volt FIFOs, which provide a 60 percent savings in power consumption compared to functionally compatible 5-volt devices, are ideal for designers who want to replace their 5-volt power supply, but need the high performance of a true 100-MHz system design. The FIFOs' ability to tolerate 5-volt inputs simplifies the process for designers by removing the need for 3.3-volt/5-volt translational logic and providing flexibility for mixed-voltage legacy system designs. Additionally, the ability to operate at the lower voltage provides a reduction in noise, which is critical to telecommunications applications such as broadband CDMA cellular base stations and PBX solutions.

All of the new 3.3-volt, 100-MHz FIFOs provide fast access times of only 6.5 ns, low first-word latency and lower ICC current than previously available FIFOs. In addition, the SuperSync FIFOs deliver advanced features such as first-word fall-through mode, partial reset, serial loading of flag offsets and register buffered flag outputs.
