SilverStream Teams With IBM to Develop and Market Enterprise Web Applications
Business Wire, August 5, 1998
BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 5, 1998--
Initiative Integrates SilverStream Application Server with IBM's
Middleware and Database Software; Enables Customers to Build Web
Applications that Leverage Host Systems
SilverStream Software today announced an ISV agreement with IBM(R) to co-develop and co-market enterprise Web applications based on SilverStream's award-winning Application Server, which has been optimized to support IBM's industry leading middleware and database software, including DB2(R) Universal Database, CICS(R), and MQSeries(R). The relationship enables IBM's customer base to develop sophisticated enterprise Web applications that leverage existing data in host systems.
The relationship is based on the capabilities of the SilverStream(tm) Application Server Release 2.0, which uses a Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) link to support DB2 Universal Database on NT, S/390(R), AS/400(R) and leading UNIX platforms. Connections to data on AS/400 and S/390 platforms are made using IBM's DB2Connect product. Additionally, SilverStream will link with IBM's transaction software applications, CICS and MQSeries, using the Interspace(R) product from Planetworks. In a separate development effort, SilverStream will also deliver Lotus Notes(tm) connectivity with the 2.0 release.
According to Bill Critch, SilverStream's director of Alliance Marketing, "The alliance between IBM and SilverStream is a winning combination. SilverStream's scalability enables companies to create leading-edge Web applications on an NT system and then link those applications to data on any platform including System 390, AS/400, UNIX, and OS/2(R)." He added, "With these applications in place, companies can build enterprise solutions that utilize the Web to optimize business practices."
"IBM customers now have the power to develop both sophisticated Java and HTML-based Web applications that contain a mix of DB2 Universal Database, CICS, MQSeries and Lotus Notes sources. Data from these and other leading data and application sources can be used or combined in the same application, on the same page, or even in the same form. This is a unique proposition that benefits users by enabling them to quickly and easily develop and deploy sophisticated Web applications that leverage existing data," said Steve Solazzo, IBM Software Group, vice president of Sales and Marketing, Solution Developers and Small/Growing Businesses.
SilverStream, and co-participants, IBM, PlanetWorks and Mecklermedia, will conduct a multi-city EarthTour to introduce the combined solution to IBM customers worldwide, showcasing the solution's ability to preserve - and increase - a company's investment in IBM technologies. This program will include an industry perspective from Forrester Research. Sales of joint product bundles will be offered to end-users and resellers via IBM's VAD partner network and SilverStream's worldwide distribution channels. The EarthTour kicks off in September in North America and travels throughout the globe.
The EarthTour is an educational forum for corporate IT executives, IT project leaders, Web developers, etc. to learn about building and deploying Web applications for the Enterprise. The EarthTour is a full day event consisting of "real world" testimonials, high level presentations and product demonstrations. The cost to attend is $199 for the day, and offers attendees more than $1,000 in valuable products, including SilverStream's Version 2.0 Single Developer Pack, the IBM DB2 Universal Database Version 5.0 60-day trial CD-ROM and Interspace Developer Pack from Planetworks. There will also be special promotional bundles and giveaways for attendees. For more information, visit the EarthTour Web site at www.earthtour.com.
