ALT Announces Availability of Next Generation Java-to-Relational Database Technology; IBM DB2 users gain NEW Java solution
Business Wire, Dec 10, 1998
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--December 10, 1998--Advanced Language Technologies, Inc. (ALT), a southern California object technology corporation providing enterprise-scale, Java(tm) object to relational database computing solutions, announced today the availability of JOR(TM), a next generation Java(TM) object-to-relational database technology for the Java platform. Targeting Java software developers using IBM DB2(R) Universal Database(TM), JOR provides seamless integration between Java objects and DB2 databases. JOR uses Java technology to harness DB2 and enables Java developers to exploit the features that have made DB2 Universal Database the premier relational database management system.
"We are pleased that ALT has chosen DB2 Universal Database as the underpinning for their JOR solution," said Jim Kelly, Vice President, Data Management Marketing, IBM Software Solutions. "The scalability, reliability and advanced features of DB2 coupled with the enterprise caliber Java strength of JOR bring real business value to our customers seeking to implement Java-based e-business and business intelligence applications."
"ALT selected to deploy its JOR technology on the DB2 platform because IBM has created a universal database engine," says Janetta Stanek, JOR Product Manager. "As the first Internet and Java enabled database, DB2 Universal Database has allowed us to bring to market our advanced Java technologies. IBM's commitment to Java technology is unparalleled in the industry."
ABOUT JOR
JOR dramatically simplifies the process of creating Java to relational database solutions, which is generally considered to be the most complex aspect of Java development. Specifically created for DB2 Universal Database, JOR offers advanced mapping features, data access support, and project management specifications for a successful Java-DB2 deployment. Prior to the introduction of JOR, object-relational tools attempted to support those features common to all relational databases. This "least common denominator" strategy in effect rendered best-of-breed databases, such as DB2 Universal Database Enterprise-Extended Edition, equal to databases such as mSQL(TM) and Microsoft(R) Access(TM).
As JOR is DB2 Universal Database centric, it supports all of DB2, including its enhanced features such as User Defined Types and SQL/J. Furthermore, JOR not only generates the relational schema, it also generates the physical database objects. By providing this level of support, customers are assured that DB2 is fully utilized.
Bundled with JOR is Reify(TM) for Java Platform: DB2 Edition, the industry's first Java project management and implementation methodology for DB2 Universal Database. Introduced at JavaOne 98, Reify provides a complete project management overview of the issues in developing Java and relational database applications. This management overview provides a detailed description of the organizational resources and team allocation needed to implement a Java to relational solution.
Reify also provides a technical overview of the issues in implementing a Java to DB2 solution including the architecture, design, development, and deployment requirements. This includes a discussion relating to the issues of translating a traditional single user Java object model into a multi-user/multi-tiered, transactional model, for example. Additionally, Reify provides a detailed overview concerning the testing requirements of a Java to DB2 system.
PRODUCT AVAILABILITY
JOR will be formally announced at the Java Business Expo on December 7, 1998. An early access version for Microsoft Windows NT will be available in Q1 1998. ALT will be located in booth no. 566 in "Start-up City."
