The 8x8 Packet Gateway provides up to four lines of toll-quality voice telephony using the industry standard G.711, G.722, G.723 and G.728 audio codecs, and it supports full-duplex acoustic echo cancellation on each line. The 8x8 Packet Gateway can respond to varying network congestion by switching among audio codecs both at the initiation of a call and also during a call. This flexibility allows cable operators to maintain call quality regardless of network traffic or conditions. The 8x8 Packet Gateway can be upgraded via the network, allowing forward compatibility with evolving standards and enabling cable operators to offer their customers new features and services in the future.

The 8x8 Packet Gateway, in conjunction with an MGCP Call Agent, will support CLASS Services, including call waiting, call forward, call hold, call transfer, three-way calling, speed dial, caller name and number ID, return call, call block and repeat call. User control is via voice menus and the touch-tone keypad of the phone.
