WaveRider Communications Inc.'s NCL135 Provides Internet Links For Wearable Computing Trial at University of Toronto
Business Wire, Dec 23, 1998
TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 23, 1998--WaveRider Communicat (OTC BB:WAVC) WaveRider Communications Inc., a leading global provider of wireless Internet products, has announced that its NCL135 high-capacity intelligent wireless bridge product is playing a significant role in a 'Wearable Computing' research trial being conducted at the University of Toronto.
Wearable Computing is a leading-edge computing and communications technology that consists of wearable signal processing hardware that provides the computational power of a UNIX workstation concealed within ordinary looking eyeglasses and clothing. It involves several students and other community members using Wearable Computing devices as they perform their regular daily activities.
WaveRider's NCL135s, located at various sites in downtown Toronto, will provide links between Wearable Computing users and the University's Internet access site.
"The trial is part of ongoing research into Wearable Computing technology and is a first step toward an intelligent, integrated wearable computing and camera system that will help people see and clearly remember their surroundings and provide greater levels of personal safety," says The University of Toronto, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering's Dr. Steve Mann. "The Wearable Computing devices enable users to see and access their e-mail, process images they see through their eyeglasses and perform many other computing and communications functions as they move from place to place."
WaveRider Communications' NCL135 provides high-capacity, wireless 2.4GHz connections between local area networks. The product can link Ethernet networks, access the Internet at high speed, connect to remote locations and perform general data networking without the ongoing costs of leased telephone lines.
"The NCL135 provides vital wireless access to the Internet," adds Mann. "The reliability and flexibility of WaveRider's technology makes it ideal for our research trial."
"Unique applications like these are one of the factors contributing to the explosive growth of the Internet," says WaveRider's director of North American sales, Jeff Robertson. "These types of projects are increasing the demand for wireless data communications."
