Empirical Software Helps One of Denmark's Largest Universities Improve Performance and Availability of Oracle Financial Applications

DENMARK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 7, 1998--
Odense University Selects Empirical Controller(TM) To Implement
Application Service Level Management
Empirical Software, Inc., a leading provider of service level management solutions, today announced that Odense University, one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Denmark, has successfully improved the overall performance and availability of its business-critical applications. Through the use of Empirical Controller(TM), a comprehensive software solution that provides the necessary tuning and impact analysis functions to improve application response times and minimize application down time, the university has benefited by optimizing the performance, availability, and reliability of its Oracle Financial Applications.
"Empirical Software's solution has allowed us to significantly improve the performance of our important financial applications by up to 15% on certain functions - all within a record timeframe," said Helge Madsen, chief information technology manager at Odense University. "Using Empirical Controller, we could quickly drill down to problem areas of our Oracle Financial Applications and fix them in real time before they impacted the end user and business performance."
Odense's reputation as an education leader and innovator in the region precedes it. To help optimize the performance of business-critical applications the University depends on, Odense invested in Empirical Controller, one component of Empirical Suite, an end-to-end solution for service level management. To date, Odense has used Empirical Controller to address problems end users have encountered while using Oracle Financial Applications -- whether it is entering, retrieving data, or generating reports. In fact, without altering the logic of application functionality, Odense was able to use the Empirical solution to address performance issues quickly and efficiently, by isolating problems in the supporting databases, minimizing the amount of application downtime, and improving overall application availability.
In order not to impact end-users during business hours, the Odense IT team implemented Empirical Controller over a weekend resulting in improved overall application availability of Oracle Financial Applications. "Given the size and complexity of the application, it is virtually impossible to optimize Oracle Financial Applications in this amount of time," stated Madsen. "Without Empirical Controller, this would have taken us three to four times longer, adversely impacting my staff."
"Empirical is committed to addressing multiple enterprise factors that impact the performance of business-critical applications and ultimately, business objectives," stated Michael Juhl, president of GJH Partners, the master distributor for Empirical Software in Scandinavia. "Our success at Odense is a further endorsement of the significant benefits that Empirical's end-to-end solution delivers to both the end user and to the IT department."
Empirical Controller Improves Service Levels
Improving service levels includes tuning applications and the supporting components. This is essential to ensure business-critical applications continue to meet service objectives. Empirical Controller focuses on the areas that cause the most performance and reliability problems: the applications and databases themselves. Most application problems originate from the actual component or from the original coded SQL, causing response times to be dramatically slower. Database problems often originate from tablespaces becoming full, fragmentation within tablespaces or insufficient distribution of data across the server; consequently, this can make database updating difficult and delay reporting time. By optimizing the structure of the database, Empirical Controller can improve application performance, often by as much as 70 percent.
Empirical Software's Unique End-To-End Solution: Empirical Suite
Empirical Controller is one of three integrated components in Empirical Suite(TM). Using applied intelligence generated from statistical neural networks, Empirical Suite enables IT organizations to plan, measure, predict, and improve application performance at all stages in the service level management (SLM) lifecycle. Empirical Suite includes three products: Empirical Planner(TM), Empirical Director(TM), and Empirical Controller(TM). It is the complementary role of each product in Empirical Suite that provides the delivery of unprecedented end-to-end SLM solutions to IT organizations.
