Independent Supermarkets Served by Fleming

Smyth Systems Inc., a subsidiary of Bristol Retail Solutions Inc. (Nasdaq:BRTL) and the exclusive distributor in the United States for the NCR 2170 point-of-sale (POS) system, Tuesday announced that Fleming Cos. (NYSE:FLM), one of the nation's leading wholesalers to independent supermarkets, has approved the NCR 2170 system as a small-store solution.

Fleming, based in Oklahoma City, Okla., a distributor of grocery products to supermarkets throughout the United States, said it will encourage purchase of the POS systems from Bristol's Smyth Systems subsidiary.

Fleming services approximately 3,000 supermarkets, including 280 company-owned stores, across its 42-state service area and employs 39,000 associates.

"We believe the NCR 2170 system being distributed by Smyth represents a great POS solution for smaller, independent markets served by our company in terms of performance and price," said Scott Yeager, Fleming director of marketing. "It's for that reason that we are pleased to approve the NCR 2170."

"We welcome Fleming as a strategic partner in this program," said Jim Reidy, Smyth Systems marketing support manager. He said Fleming indicated a large potential for the NCR 2170 system in 1999 and that he expects the relationship with Fleming would significantly expand in the coming months.

Bristol Retail Solutions, based in Newport Beach, provides retail automation products and services to supermarkets, restaurants, fast-food outlets and health-care facilities through company-owned POS dealerships, such as Smyth Systems, and value-added resellers.
