Business Wire, Feb 24, 1998
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 1998--
Industry's First Web- and Java-based Management and Control
Product for Enterprise-Wide Storage Management Now Available
Legato Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: LGTO), a leader in the enterprise storage management software market, today announced the general availability of its Global Enterprise Management of Storage (G.E.M.S.(TM)) product, version 1.1, providing enterprise-wide command and control for protecting distributed storage. G.E.M.S.' approach for centrally managing distributed storage allows IT personnel to cohesively administer and control disparate storage management resources across an entire organization, ensuring that data is protected and accessible. G.E.M.S. provides the core tools a customer needs to manage across multiple Legato data zones effectively, including policy-based administration, software distribution, media management, and flexible software licensing. A data zone is the operations controlled by the storage management applications where the actual backups and recoveries occur.
With the release of G.E.M.S. version 1.1, the GEMStation can now run on Windows NT, in addition to Sun Solaris. The unique design of G.E.M.S. provides a completely scalable solution, and protects the investment in hardware infrastructure of existing NetWorker customers by embracing the corporate intranet. This G.E.M.S. release supports the Oracle 7.3 database for both Windows NT and UNIX, in addition to Sybase on UNIX.
"Just as centralized application and network management are key elements of creating a mission critical environment, so is centralized administration of all storage management resources," said Michael Peterson, president of Strategic Research Corporation of Santa Barbara, CA. "Legato's G.E.M.S. architecture and console creates a needed management framework for protecting your data," concluded Peterson.
"The general release of this product confirms Legato's commitment to execute on its enterprise storage management architecture," said Nora Denzel, senior vice president of Legato Systems, Inc. "Positive feedback was received from customers involved in the limited availability release of the G.E.M.S. product, who expressed their appreciation in now being able to bring order to the chaos of distributed storage management."
G.E.M.S. is a critical component of Legato's enterprise storage management architecture. This unique design paradigm provides true storage management scalability by addressing customer requirements for manageability, availability and performance across an organization's storage network -- ranging from campus environments to entire global networks. Legato's enterprise storage management architecture minimizes costly disruptions in business operations.
G.E.M.S. 1.1 Overview
With G.E.M.S., a simple and intuitive web browser interface provides a single, global view of an entire organization's storage management operation through the G.E.M.S. console. G.E.M.S. consists of three major components: management of standard operating procedures through the Policy Manager; software distribution and management of desired state via the Software Manager; and a License Manager enabling easy licensing and distribution. Via Java objects, storage administrators are able to control, configure and monitor hundreds, and even thousands, of storage management nodes spread throughout a global organization.
G.E.M.S. includes the industry's first policy manager that allows organizations to deploy completely automated standard operating procedures for storage management. A G.E.M.S. customer will be able to define storage management policies that can be selectively applied to different groups of users, storage, or data. The Policy Manager technology enables an organization to create and apply consistent procedures, templates, and span of control to managed nodes across the enterprise.
G.E.M.S. includes two additional integrated modules, which will distribute and license both storage management software for new installations and software upgrades, as well as allocate the licenses for storage management administration. This provides a consistent approach to licensing and distributing storage management software to the appropriate storage nodes.
Pricing and Availability
Version 1.1 is available, with pricing starting at $3,000 (U.S. suggested list) for the GEMStation, G.E.M.S. console, and two managed nodes. Additional managed nodes are available in multiples of one, five, and 25.
