Intelliguard Budtool Provides Added Tape Backup Software Services to Network Appliance Customers

Business Wire, Feb 26, 1998

DUBLIN, CALIF.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 26, 1998--Intelliguard Software, the leader in standards-based data protection solutions for the network-attached storage market, today announced expanded BudTool software services for Network Appliance (NASDAQ: NTAP) data servers. Network Appliance is the leading provider of high-performance network-attached data servers. As part of the added service, Intelliguard will provide free backup and recovery software for a single tape backup device to Network Appliance (NetApp) customers for a limited time.

"NetApp customers can now benefit from Intelliguard's high performance BudTool backup software using the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP)," said Charlie Simmons, vice president of marketing at Network Appliance. "Our customers continue to demand more capacity on our data servers along with reliable data management tools. Intelliguard and NetApp's continued collaboration in developing well-integrated backup and recovery solutions helps our customers achieve that requirement."

BudTool 4.5 employs the NDMP Version 2 to move a NetApp data server's content to and from its locally-attached tape drives, effectively removing the network traffic that may impede backup performance. Tape drives attached to the data server may be stand-alone devices or a component within a robotic media library system. The tight integration of BudTool with Network Appliance data servers delivers high performance and functionality for a mixed UNIX/Windows NT server environments without any compromises.

"This collaboration is key to the success of our business strategy because we use our NetApp data servers to protect our corporate data in a BudTool backup environment," said John D. Stephens, ITCS system administrator at Raytheon Systems.

Intelliguard and Network Appliance co-developed the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP), which is an emerging standard for simplifying network data management. The two companies continue to work with several vendors to enhance and promote this standard.

"Reliable and efficient data recovery is a significant part of a disaster recovery plan, and BudTool has proven that our corporate data is protected," said Stephens. "I use BudTool as a data recovery tool, not just for backup purposes."

Bob Wilson, senior vice president of marketing at Intelliguard, added, "With the explosive growth of corporate data assets and the acceptance of NetApp data servers for network storage, BudTool's centralized management of local data backup and recovery is a strategic solution."
