DOCUMENTUM Defines New Benchmark for Ease of Use With Its Market-Leading Intranet Document Management System; Integration Extended To Include Microsoft Windows Explorer

Business Wire, Jan 7, 1998

PLEASANTON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 1998--In continuing efforts to extend ease of use and accessibility to its Enterprise Document Management System(TM)(EDMS) for intranets, DOCUMENTUM(R) Inc. (NASDAQ:DCTM) today announced planned support for Microsoft Windows Explorer as a native interface.

This desktop interface allows the Windows Explorer utility (shipped with all Windows 95 and Windows NT systems) to browse, navigate, utilize version control, participate in workflow, and access DOCUMENTUM's unique virtual document support for compound documents in the DOCUMENTUM repository or "Docbase."

The contents of the Docbase are accessible by the user in the same manner they would access a hard drive; as an icon representing a Docbase in the Windows Explorer. The Docbase icon can then be expanded to view its contents, represented as a hierarchy of folders and documents, just like the local file system.

In addition, the "Find" menu selection allows the user to search for documents. The interface will enable customers to seamlessly access business-critical documents in work environments to which they are accustomed.

"The Explorer enhancement makes DOCUMENTUM EDMS much easier to deploy to thousands of users across a company because the training curve is reduced to virtually zero," said Matt Shanahan, director of product marketing at DOCUMENTUM.

"This added capability will facilitate massive and speedy deployments for global corporations that want to manage their most important knowledge assets by allowing customers to access any information in various applications."

This product enhancement adds to the ease of use options for Docbase access that DOCUMENTUM already supports, which include integrations to: Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Office, Open Document Management API (ODMA), Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, SAP(TM)'s R/3(TM), PeopleSoft Enterprise Application, CAD systems, as well as a family of client interfaces from DOCUMENTUM. The interfaces fit seamlessly into a company's infrastructure and are incorporated into a user's preferred work environment.

"DOCUMENTUM provides enterprise scalability coupled with a wide range of interface options that ease large scale deployment and usability," said Douglas Neary, solutions executive at IBM Worldwide EDMS Solutions Group. "Since DOCUMENTUM supports and is integrated with other vendor products, our world-wide users can access programs without leaving their native applications."

DOCUMENTUM EDMS helps create an open architecture environment with the provision of a single repository design for industrial-grade intranets and business-critical document applications. By extending the interface options to include not only ubiquitous Web browsers, but also the Windows desktop, the DOCUMENTUM system provides the widest range of options for customer deployment and usability, regardless of the user's point of access.
