Internet Communications Provides Enterprise-Wide Multi-Media Capability to Colorado Christian University; CCU Building Infrastructure to Support Future Plans for Distance Learning

Business Wire, July 16, 1998

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 16, 1998-- Internet Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-INCC), a leading communications integrator and network management company, announced a contract with Colorado Christian University (CCU) to build an integrated voice and data wide-area-network.

Internet Communications (ICC) will design, install and maintain the integrated private ATM network for CCU's main campus in Lakewood, Colorado, and five remote locations throughout Colorado including two additional locations in Lakewood, and one in Colorado Springs, Grand Junction and Morrison. ICC will also provide InterCede and InterAlert, two of its 24-by-seven network management services. The contract is valued at just under $1 million.

CCU invited several major competitors of ICC to participate in a bid process. ICC won the contract by providing multiple hardware solutions showing its multi-vendor expertise and by being the only single-source partner able to design, install and support a network that handles voice, data, video and fax applications simultaneously.

"ICC did a great job in the planning and design process. Their team approach answered all of our questions and concerns. They bring a thoroughness and integrity to their tasks that is very comforting. We're looking forward to our partnership with ICC," stated Gary Ewen, chief information Officer for CCU.

CCU, an institution of higher learning that offers Christ-centered undergraduate and graduate educational programs, was operating with multiple networks for voice, data and fax. They were looking for a solution to consolidate and optimize their network operations, both on a cost and performance basis. In addition, CCU indicated that, as part of their long-term strategy, they wanted to broaden their reach by providing students with a communications infrastructure robust enough to accommodate video capabilities for distance learning.

According to Rick Gribble, sales executive, "There is a paradigm shift in the educational market and they know it. Today, the redesigned network will make their operation run smoother and give them a nice rate of return on their technology investment." He went on to say, "The infrastructure we've designed will help them support more students, or customers if you will. When you think about adding 30 students, you have to add a new professor and your students are limited by your geographic thumb print. The idea here is that they can add 30 to 300 new students, depending on the kind of interaction they want to make available, bringing in students across the country with a much more attractive cost structure -- that's essentially what they're looking at."

With CCU's strategy in mind, the scaleable network architecture has been designed to handle multi-media traffic and can easily be upgraded to handle increasing demand. In addition, the private ATM network design provides dynamic allocation of bandwidth and allows CCU the ability to prioritize bandwidth allocation to certain traffic types. "You can prioritize voice so that voice always gets through. But when voice traffic is low, then all the channels are available for data or voice. Distance learning is an excellent way to use up the bandwidth, particularly for evening programming," stated Carrie Nilemo, major accounts manager.

The main campus in Lakewood, acting as the main hub, was designed with redundant CPU's to provide centralized voice call routing, voice mail, auto attendant and centralized, GUI station and system administration. Another important feature of the design was the access by the remote locations to pull through features typically handled by the main hub location.

Colorado Christian University is part of a coalition of Christian universities across the country, including 91 colleges and universities in 29 states and Canada. CCU is considered a leader in technology among coalition schools. Founded in 1914, the University currently serves 3,000 students.
