MANILA, Philippines--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 22, 1998--

CA Solution Maximizes Performance And Scalability Of HDMF's VLDB

National Savings System

Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) today announced that the Home Development Mutual Fund (HDMF) of the Philippines will standardize on CA's Ingres II to centralize the institution's Provident Fund Database System.

HDMF, a government financial institution with more than 4 million members, is developing an integrated nationwide savings program that will encourage Filipino workers to set aside funds for housing. Recent changes to the HDMF program had caused an enormous strain on the organization's legacy applications. Transaction processing times had increased dramatically, and day-to-day operations were frequently disrupted due to the limited capacity of database files and poor performance of mission-critical applications. The new Ingres II-based system is designed to alleviate these problems.

"The key factors for choosing Ingres II were its openness and robustness," said Manuel Crisostomo, vice-president of HDMF's Bicol, Visayas Operations. "We tested Ingres II as we were developing our modernized system, and found that it was able to support the customized applications dictated by HDMF's unique transaction requirements. Ingres II provides an easy and gradual migration of legacy files without disrupting our daily operations."

"We needed immediate results and we were pressed for time," said Jojo Bacaltos, HDMF corporate executive officer. "Getting our IT staff up to speed on other RDBMS engines would have been much more difficult. With Ingres II, our developers were able to complete their jobs faster because they did not have to contend with the substantial learning curves associated with other relational database management systems."

Today, the HDMF Regional Office in Cebu controls Very Large Databases (VLDBs) for local accounts and centralized funds. The Cebu regional office is currently connecting the remaining operational divisions to the system, and in the near future, all HDMF databases will be standardized on Ingres. A system is now being developed to serve as a gateway between the Ingres/DBMS and DOS-based applications in the PC teller machines.

"CA analyzed HDMF's requirements and was able to come up with a powerful solution to meet the Fund's demanding database specifications," said Tan Kia Kok, CA senior vice president. "We are working closely with HDMF to extend our relationship, and we are also exploring the opportunity to utilize CA technology for end-to-end management of the entire HDMF enterprise."

Ingres II is a critical component of Harmony, CA's complete information management solution. Ingres II presents a new approach to n-tiered relational application development and information management. It offers a complete solution for managing the complexity of distributed data sources, while maintaining the product strengths and reliability that users of Ingres technology have come to expect.
