Trend Micro Offers Free Protection From Internet E-mail Security Flaw

Trend Micro Inc., the leader in centrally managed virus protection, is offering free protection against the newly discovered security hole found in Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Netscape (NASDAQ:NSCP) e-mail applications.
Concerned organizations can download a free 30-day copy of InterScan VirusWall, Trend Micro's Internet gateway virus scanning product, from the company's Web site at www.antivirus.com. The software, which requires no end-user involvement, detects -- and blocks, deletes or quarantines -- potentially malicious e-mail messages. Trend Micro customers using InterScan VirusWall for NT, Solaris and HP-UX can download a free upgrade that includes this new protection from the company's Web site.
The security threat, reported this week by major news sources, potentially permits a malicious e-mail message carrying an attachment to crash a computer or destroy data. Moreover, the e-mail attachment need not necessarily be opened in order to trigger the attack. The malicious code is embedded in "tags" found in the e-mail message itself.
Trend Micro's enterprise solution installs quickly and easily at the Internet gateway to stop malicious messages before they reach a user's mailbox and cause damage. This centralized solution provides an immediate alternative to the time-consuming process of individually installing software patches on each corporate workstation. InterScan VirusWall administration does not involve end-users, requires no attendance and scanning occurs automatically. The system administrator can choose from a variety of notification options, including sending alerts to the system administrator, recipient and sender. Potentially malicious files can be deleted or quarantined.
