DIGIX and Cisco Tee Up the 1998 U.S. Open; Two Internet Leaders Bring Golf's Premiere Event to Millions on the Web

Business Wire, June 16, 1998

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 16, 1998--First-tier national Internet carrier, DIGEX, an Intermedia Communications Company (Nasdaq:ICIX) today announced that it will provide high-speed Internet connectivity and Web site management services to the United States Golf Association (USGA) for the 1998 U.S. Open golf championship using networking technology from Cisco Systems, Inc. The U.S. Open takes place at the Olympic Club in San Francisco this week.

The U.S. Open's official Web site www.usopen.com offers fans ongoing player updates, scores and other championship news, with hyperlinks to other USGA Web sites. The USGA will use its high-speed Internet connections to the DIGEX network and routers from Cisco Systems to update content on www.usopen.com and communicate with its headquarters in Far Hills, New Jersey, from the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Visitors will access www.usopen.com over the DIGEX Internet backbone, which features 100% Cisco Systems networking technology. DIGEX was the first national Internet carrier to be designated a Cisco Powered Network(TM). ISPs such as DIGEX that carry the Cisco Powered Network mark have passed rigorous criteria set by Cisco, ensuring that authorized providers have the equipment, staff, and quality processes in place to provide high-quality network services.

This year, the USGA estimates that the championship's Web site, www.usopen.com, will serve millions of fans per day. To support this huge volume of site traffic, DIGEX Web Site Management has deployed a secure, high-performance Web solution designed to ensure maximum reliability and availability. DIGEX has conducted extensive stress testing of the site as part of a pre-launch performance anlaysis. To ensure maximum uptime and availability, the site is mirrored at DIGEX's East and West Web Site Management Facilities utilizing Cisco's Distributed Director, a networking device that redirects end user service requests to the closest and most available server.

"This is an exciting opportunity for DIGEX and Cisco Systems to demonstrate our commitment to reliability, performance and service for the USGA and all the fans of this most prestigious golf event," said Gene Noble, vice president of Business Internet Connectivity Solutions at DIGEX. "It's an excellent demonstration of how the Internet and sophisticated Web technology can be used to reach a global audience," added Earl Galleher, president of DIGEX Web Site Management Group.

"Cisco is proud to work with DIGEX as a partner to provide the Internet networking and Internet traffic load-balancing technology for the USGA's premier event," said Larry Lang, vice president of Marketing of the Service Provider Line of Business at Cisco Systems. DIGEX is an official Cisco Powered Network provider so the USGA is assured of having a reliable, secure and high-performance network solution that golf fans can depend on."
