Business Wire, June 17, 1998
OTTAWA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 1998--Corel (NASDAQ:COSFF) (TSE:COS.) Sybase to Provide Thin-Client Java(TM) Deployment with jBridge(TM)
Corel Corporation today announced a technology licensing agreement with Sybase Inc., one of the ten largest global independent software companies, to develop and deliver Java(TM)-based Web deployment technology to Sybase customers using Corel's jBridge(TM) technology. The deal makes Sybase the first company to license jBridge, Corel's Java-based thin-client technology.
The two companies will work together to develop a specialized solution for some of Sybase's product line. With jBridge, Sybase customers will be able to use Java technology to deploy their applications over the Internet or company intranet to reach a broad range of new users while reducing the cost of deployment.
"We are extremely pleased that Sybase has chosen jBridge to further advance their Web deployment efforts. jBridge will help corporations leverage existing technology investments, including legacy software, hardware and data, while taking advantage of advancements such as Java and thin-client computing," said Dr. Michael Cowpland, president and chief executive officer of Corel Corporation. "Corel's strategy is to offer our customers a number of viable alternatives and we believe that Web deployment technology is the way of the future."
"Major corporations around the world are demanding technology to reduce the total cost of ownership of the desktop in the enterprise," said Eric Miles, senior vice president, engineering at Sybase. "jBridge technology will provide our customers with the option to utilize the powerful and state-of-the-art solution for quickly delivering enterprise applications to the Internet."
jBridge is a thin-client/server product that makes it possible to run unmodified Windows(R) applications from any computer with a Java Virtual Machine. Applications running from a Windows NT(R) server can be deployed across networks, including the Internet and company intranets, to a number of different client operating systems. Unlike competing application remoting technologies, jBridge does not require modifications to Windows NT and has the ability to process events locally on the client to reduce network traffic and server loads. jBridge delivers these features using industry standards such as Java and TCP/IP. For more information please see the jBridge Web site at www.corel.com/jbridge.
>Sybase and Corel are currently testing jBridge in conjunction with Sybase clients. Corel is planning a commercial release of jBridge by late 1998 andwill be showing an early release version of the product at Sybase's PowerSoft Users Conference in August. Corel Corporation
