Innovation Data Processing Will Integrate Backup And Recovery Products With StorageTek's Advanced Features
Business Wire, June 17, 1998
LITTLE FALLS, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 1998--
Innovation and StorageTek Unite to Bring Dramatic Improvement
to Backup and Recovery Operations
Enterprise data storage and backup/recovery leaders Innovation Data Processing and StorageTek(R) (Storage Technology Corp.,NYSE: STK) today announced that they have signed an agreement to integrate the advanced features of StorageTek Enterprise Storage System products with Innovation backup and recovery software products.
Innovation will exploit the industry leading data replication solution, SnapShot(TM), by utilizing the StorageTek Virtual DASD Access Kit (VDAK) with its Fast Dump Restore (FDR) product line for MVS and OS/390. This will allow the Innovation software to take advantage of StorageTek's virtual storage architecture to dramatically improve all backup operations. Initially, this integration will improve the capability and speed of FDR InstantBackup and FastCPK.
Tom Meehan, vice president of technology for Innovation Data Processing said, "Our customers are excited about the improvements that they can achieve by combining Innovation software and StorageTek virtual storage. By taking a SnapShot copy of the data, backup can be non-disruptively performed in parallel with normal business processing. And this can work without increasing overall storage capacity."
The FDR software enhancements will be compatible with all virtual DASD products developed by StorageTek. Today these include the Iceberg product line as well as the RAMAC Virtual Array (RVA)(TM) family that is marketed by IBM. In addition, StorageTek and Innovation will work together to enhance Innovation's cross platform and open systems software products for compatibility with SCSI attachable disc drives from StorageTek. These include the StorageTek Kodiak subsystem and the RAMAC Scalable Array (RSA) family that is marketed by IBM. Don Mannuell, vice president and general manager for StrageTek Enterprise DASD, said, "Co-located enterprise storage systems are becoming more and more important to information systems managers because of the cost benefits associated with centralizing data storage. As they centralize storage, it is important that their staff have common software interfaces and processes for backup and recovery."
"As with our MVS backup solution," Tom Meehan added, "our aim is to deliver the fastest and most functional backup system for the open computing environment as well." Innovation will initially certify its Sun, HP, and AIX backup products for use with Kodiak and RSA.
