TCG To Provide High Speed Data, Internet to All San Diego City Schools
Business Wire, June 23, 1998
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 1998--Teleport Communications Group Inc. (TCG/NASDAQ:TCGI) has been selected by the San Diego United School District Board of Education to provide a high speed data network which will give the district's 166 schools easier access to the Internet.
The project will begin at three district high schools and one elementary school. The three high schools in the first phase are La Jolla High, Scripps Ranch High and Morse High School in southeast San Diego. The elementary school is Lindberg/Schweitzer in the Clairemont area.
The San Diego Unified School District network, awarded to TCG through a competitive bid process, is the first of its kind in San Diego County. It will connect the school sites via TCG's DS1 frame relay at full T1 speed which is much faster than an ordinary dial up phone modem.
In addition to the high speed circuits, TCG will provide free TCG CERFnet Tier 1 Internet service to each school in the district. This will make Web-based curriculum, distance learning opportunities and all other Internet-based education available quickly, effectively and with equal accessibility.
TCG is in its sixth year in the San Diego market and is serving the City of San Diego under a contract won by competitive bid and awarded by the California Communications Alliance. TCG also is a major telecommunications provider to the County of San Diego.
TCG's San Diego network, which became operational in 1993, has a fiber optic network that stretches over 300 route miles from the Mexican border to Camp Pendleton. The network supports an ATM platform and Internet access. TCG received regulatory authority from the Public Utilities Commission to be a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) in California in 1996.
TCG is the nation's first and largest Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC), using both fiber-optic and broadband wireless service to provide information-intensive businesses with an array of advanced local and long distance voice, data, video and Internet services. With the recent acquisition of ACC Corp., TCG currently operates in 82 major markets. On January 8, 1998, AT&T and TCG agreed to merge in a transaction that at the close of business that day was valued at $11.3 billion. The agreement is subject to state and federal regulatory approval. For more information on TCG, visit the website at www.tcg.com.
