HP Demonstrates Industry-Leading Scanning Technology at Windows 98 Launch Event; HP Innovation and Leadership Make Imaging Devices Easier to Use on Windows 98

Business Wire, June 25, 1998

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 25, 1998--Hewlett-Packard Company today demonstrated the benefits of its award-winning HP ScanJet 5100C scanner operating on the Windows 98 operating system platform and provided a glimpse of its Universal Serial Bus (USB)-prototype scanner here at Microsoft Corporation's Windows(R) 98 launch event.

HP's presence and demonstration at the event support its ongoing collaboration with Microsoft to provide industry-leading scanning technology.

Among the features demonstrated were the HP ScanJet 5100C scanner's direct push-button connectivity, made possible through the Windows 98 platform and HP's exclusive Intelligent Scanning Technology.

"Over the last few years, scanner use has grown dramatically, and scanners are becoming more and more common in the home and home office," said John Stedman, general manager of HP's Appliance and Scanner Business Unit. "Collaborating with companies such as Microsoft helps HP continue to develop and provide superior products that are easy to install, manage and operate."

HP and Microsoft have a long history of breaking imaging boundaries together. Both companies contributed to the development of the TIFF and FLASHPIX(TM) file formats. HP also contributed to Microsoft's Still Image Architecture (STI), a key feature of the Windows 98 platform. Enhancements of STI include the following: -0-

-- versatile connectivity, including alternative hardware
     connections (for example, SCSI, USB and IEEE 1394);

-- event monitor and control center, which allows users to launch
     applications by pressing a single button on the scanner; and

-- scanner control panel, which makes scanning as intuitive and easy
     as printing.

"HP and Microsoft have worked closely together to improve the PC imaging experience in Windows 98," said Rob Bennett, group product manager, Windows platform, Microsoft Corp. "HP's insight into the typical customer's imaging needs resulted in Windows 98-based imaging solutions that are easier and more intuitive for our mutual customers."

Beyond Windows 98, HP intends to continue its work with Microsoft to design and implement features that make scanning solutions more intuitive for acquiring, managing, processing and publishing electronic and conventional images.
