Netcom & Computer City Expand Business Alliance; Netcom Internet Products and Services Sold Through Computer City In-Store Business Solutions Centers and Internet Cafes

Business Wire, June 9, 1998

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1998--NETCOM On-Line Communication Services, Inc., a leading global Internet service provider and wholly-owned subsidiary of ICG Communications, Inc., today announced the expansion of its alliance with Computer City, a subsidiary of Tandy Corporation located in Fort Worth, Texas (NYSE:TAN).

This new alliance will allow Computer City to offer the full range of Netcom's Internet connectivity and Web hosting solutions to professionals and small business customers within Computer City's newly established in-store Business Solutions Centers and Internet Cafes.

The agreement creates an ideal opportunity for professionals, SOHO (small office/home office) operators and buyers of business computer equipment to select the appropriate Internet service levels that fit their needs and budgets.

"The Netcom/Computer City Alliance is an entirely new way to sample Netcom's full line of products," noted Gene Shimshock, Netcom's vice president of marketing."Netcom specializes in providing services to small and medium-sized businesses and we are delighted that Computer City Business Solutions Centers will showcase our Internet productivity solutions to those customers. Netcom solutions include analog and high-speed digital connections to the Internet, E-mail and faxing, technical support, and Web hosting."

The alliance extends Netcom's two-year relationship with Computer City -- and an even longer partnership with Computer City's parent, Tandy Corp. of Fort Worth. Tandy, which operates nearly 6,900 RadioShack(R) stores, announced its first Computer City superstore in 1991, and in 1996 announced that the subsidiary would operate as an independent company.

"The Business Solutions Centers provide total solutions and consulting services to help small businesses and home offices configure, install or upgrade computer environments in a cost-effective manner tailored to meet their business needs," said Nathan Morton, Computer City co-chairman and chief executive officer. "A key component of these services is the Internet. With Netcom, our customers can find the Internet access and Web hosting solutions that are right for them. Plus, the Internet Cafes offer a relaxing environment where first-timers and consumers can take a test drive on the information superhighway."

Computer City's five Washington, D.C., area superstores will be the first to feature a Business Solutions Center, catering to business proprietors and computer professionals, and a consumer-oriented Internet Cafe. Computer City will roll out these new retailing concepts in nine other U.S. cities later this year. Computer City is opening in-store specialty sections that will enable business professionals and consumers to sample a full range of computer products including Netcom's Internet productivity solutions. Under the alliance, Computer City associates will assist customers on-site in the Computer City superstores, complementing the presales and technical assistance offered by Netcom's sales consultants.
