Business Wire, March 30, 1998

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 30, 1998--

Digital's StorageWorks products for Sun Sparc workstations include

Quantum Rushmore(tm) NTE solid state disks

Quantum Corporation (NMS:QNTM) and Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE:DEC) today announced that Digital is including Quantum's Rushmore(tm) NTE solid state disk drives in Digital's StorageWorks solutions for Sun Sparc workstations. Previously, Digital's StorageWorks solid state disk solutions have been available only to customers of Digital's workstations.

"We're offering the industry's leading high-speed storage solution to Sun customers for the first time," said Kirby Wadsworth, vice president of Storage Marketing at Digital. "Now Sun Sparc workstation users have the benefits of a cost-effective, high-speed storage solution for time-critical applications in areas such as CAD-CAM, imaging and finance."

The StorageWorks solid state disks offer Sun Sparc workstation customers near-instantaneous access to time-critical data. Using DRAM to store the data, the products provide simple, fast data access for data-intensive and transaction-intensive applications. The Digital StorageWorks solid state disks leverage Quantum's Rushmore solid state disk products.

"We're delighted that Sun customers now have the benefit of our industry-leading SSD products," said Charlie Cassidy, Quantum vice president of engineering for solid state disks. "Digital provides a very high-quality SSD solution, and Sun customers will truly benefit by Digital's expansion into their market."

The StorageWorks solid state disks (EZ32-VW and EZ31-VW) offer throughput of up to 5,000 I/O requests per second and access times of less than 90 microseconds. Employing a SCSI-2 interface, they provide sustained data-transfer rates of more than 13 megabytes per second. The StorageWorks products are offered in a 3.5-inch form factor, with a capacity of either 268 MB (EZ32-VW) or 134 MB (EZ31-VW). The drives are available in non-volatile configurations, meaning that they have an integrated data retention system.

Pricing and Availability

The StorageWorks EZ32-VW and EZ31-VW solid state disks are priced at $8125 and $4125, respectively. They are available now.
