SMSC Introduces DAC97S01 Audio Codec IC for AC'97

Business Wire, March 9, 1998

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 9, 1998--Standard Microsystems Corporation (SMSC) today announced the DAC97S01 multimedia audio codec IC for PC motherboard applications.

The DAC97S01 is a general purpose, 18-bit full duplex stereo, audio codec that conforms to the analog component specification of AC'97, the latest industry audio standard.

Robert Hollingsworth, Standard Microsystems' Vice President of Marketing stated: "Now, in addition to our full line of advanced PC I/O integrated circuits for PC motherboards, SMSC can offer our customers an audio codec, providing high performance audio, that conforms to and surpasses the PC industry's AC'97 specification."

The device incorporates a full-duplex stereo A/D and D/A converter using high performance Sigma Delta technology, full AC-link protocol compliance, and operates at either 3.3VDC or 5VDC. The IC also features an AC'97-compliant mixer, energy-saving power down modes, a 48K sample/second rate, six analog line-level inputs, and a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 95 dB through the DAC and mixer.

The DACs, ADCs and mixers are integrated with analog I/Os which include four analog line-level stereo inputs, two analog line-level mono inputs, and three output channels. For improved noise immunity, the DAC97S01 separates the basic analog codec functions from the high level digital control functions as required by the AC'97 specification. The device communicates via the five-wire AC Link to any digital component conforming to AC'97, providing flexibility in the audio system design.

The DAC97S01, packaged in a small AC'97-compliant 48-pin thin quad flat pack (TQFP), is especially suited for notebook and desktop PC motherboard applications that have a digital audio controller or multimedia solution and need a codec for the analog interface. In addition, it can be used in daughter boards, add-on cards, PCMCIA cards, or even outside the main chassis in a speaker.

The DAC97S01 is priced at $5.25 in quantities of 10,000. Samples will be available in mid-March and production quantities will be available in June.
