JCCOM's New 36X Multi-read, Multi-tasking CD-ROM Features Velocity Control Logic to Reduce Access Time

Business Wire, May 1, 1998

TORRANCE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 1998--Japan Computer & Communications Inc. (JCCOM) Friday introduced a multi-read, multi-tasking 36X CD-ROM drive that employs a velocity control logic feature to reduce access time and increase the lifespan of the motor mechanism.

In addition, the new drive supports all the latest CD-ROM formats including: Multisession Photo-CD, CD-Digital Audio, CD-XA, CD-I, CD-R, High Sierra, CDEXTRA, Enhanced CD, I-trax, Video CD/2.0, and CD-RW.

With Velocity Control Logic (VCL), the JCD-36X achieves a smooth velocity profile of the laser mechanism over the entire disk surface. Transfer rates range from 2700 to 5400 Kbps. An advanced fluid-bearing motor design offers increased stability and reliability, while a motorized tray loading mechanism eliminates the need for costly caddies.

With just a slight push, the tray closes automatically, and for greater ease of use, its front panel offers a two-button design that can be used to instantly access playback functions.

Other JCD-36X features include DMA support, a self-calibrating digital servo control, CD-ROM bootability and Video CD compatible/MPEG with full motion video playback. The system offers dynamic audio playback enhanced through 1-bit DAC.

Compatible with computers running DOS 5.0 and higher, MS Windows 3.1, MS Windows 95, MS Windows NT and OS/2, the JCD-36X requires minimal CPU utilization, enabling supported operating systems to run at maximum speed and efficiency.

MSRP for the JCD-36X is $99. Availability is immediate through JCCOM's nationwide distributor and retail network, including Fry's and other popular mass merchandisers.

With headquarters in Torrance, Japan Computer & Communications manufactures and markets CD-R and CD-RW drives, modems, videoconferencing solutions and video capture/display products.
