Technical Data Freeway Delivers World's Fastest 805X Soft Core; RISC-Like Design Set the Bar for Speed, Power, and Feature Set

Business Wire, Nov 16, 1998

CONCORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1998--Technical Data Freeway, Inc. (TDF), announced today that it has delivered an implementation of the world's fastest 8051/8052 microcontroller core. The RISC805x core executes most instructions in one clock cycle, making it nearly twelve times as fast as the standard part when running at the same clock frequency. But the RISC805x can also run at up to 100 Mhz, delivering an amazing 100 million instructions/second.

The RISC805x is a member of a family of binary-compatible 805x cores developed by Richard A. Watts Ltd. and marketed by TDF. Said Frederick Hinchliffe 2nd, President of TDF, "The RISC805x is a developer's dream. It is blazingly fast - twice as fast as Mentor's M8051WASP - but can be cranked down to a couple of milliwatts for portable applications. It has a hardware MAC and 16-bit extended instructions for DSP functionality, yet is binary-compatible to host legacy software. It can be delivered in numerous configurations for optimal gate count, area, and functionality - you pay only for what you need."

The RISC805x is ideal for telecommunications applications, where the DSP capability can replace slower software; consumer applications, where battery operation and small die size are critical; and applications rich in legacy software such as medical instrumentation, implantable devices, and oil field data logging.

The RISC805x is available in VHDL source code and in netlist form in both VHDL and Verilog. There is a demo software version available as well as an evaluation board. A summary specification with examples has been posted on the TDF web site.
