HP Launches HP OpenView Application Quality of Service Strategy; New Capabilities Leverage HP's Strength to Deliver New Application Management Solutions
Business Wire, Nov 3, 1998
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 1998--Hewlett-Packard Company today announced the HP OpenView Application Quality of Service (application QoS) strategy, expanding the capabilities of its HP OpenView Applications and Server Management Solution. Application QoS gives IT managers increased control and efficiency in meeting line-of-business users' requirements for responsive and available business-critical applications.

Application QoS goes beyond existing application-management tools
by combining the strengths of HP's proven system and network
management with built-in, application-specific expertise and
innovative new management capabilities. The HP OpenView solution
allows IT managers to do the following:
-- navigate quickly to the root cause of service failures and launch
service-specific corrective action;
-- manage the end-user experience in terms of responsiveness and
availability; and
-- manage an application service, from the initial definition of the
service through delivery to the end user.

"We emphasize managing the application from an end-user-service
perspective," said Olivier Helleboid, general manager of the HP
OpenView Business Unit. "With HP OpenView, IT managers have the tools
they need to meet line-of-business' increasing demands for dependable,
consistent application services." Building upon HP OpenView's current
capabilities, new products, announced as part of the QoS efforts
within the HP OpenView Application and Server Management Solution,
include the following:
-- Enhancements to simplify availability management in large
environments -- IT/Operations 5.0, a newly enhanced version of
the HP OpenView flagship operations- and availability-management
product, further extends IT/Operations' lead in providing
application-service management for very large, complex and
mission-critical IT environments. New dynamic-configuration
capabilities make it easier to configure, deploy and maintain
management infrastructures consisting of up to tens of thousands
of elements.
-- New, service-driven availability and performance management -- HP
OpenView ServiceNavigator provides immediate assessment of the
impact of lower-level IT component failures or performance
degradations on business services. ServiceNavigator significantly
reduces recovery time by making it easy to quickly navigate to
the root cause of a service problem so appropriate corrective
action can be taken.
-- New reporting capabilities -- A new release of HP OpenView
Service Reporter works with IT/Operations 5.0 to provide
automated generation of integrated service availability and
performance reports.
-- New capabilities for service-desk and service-level management --
Enhancements to HP OpenView IT Service Manager enable
line-of-business service expectations to be translated directly
into operational application-management policies.
-- New management solutions for SAP and Oracle -- New versions of
the HP OpenView SMART Plug-Ins for SAP R/3 and Oracle add SAP
R/3, Oracle 7 and Oracle 8 performance-management capabilities to
the HP OpenView suite of products.
HP also announced plans for new application-response-time management technologies to complement HP OpenView SMART Plug-Ins and Application Response Measurement (ARM) solutions. The new technologies enable monitoring of end-user application response times without the need for embedded instrumentation. HP OpenView will extend the range of choices customers have for managing custom and packaged applications within an easy-to-implement, integrated solution.
