HP Earns Highest OLTP Results; Leading High-end Server Vendor Posts Highest TPC-C Performance with Single Oracle Database
Business Wire, Nov 3, 1998
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 1998-- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced better Transaction Processing Performance Council Benchmark C (TPC-C)(1) results than all single-instance Oracle results to date, demonstrating the superior technology of HP's powerful HP 9000 V-Class Enterprise Server featuring HP's HyperPlane architecture and HP 64-bit PA-RISC(2) CPU technology.
The TPC-C results achieved on the HP 9000 V2200 Enterprise Server running Oracle8 Enterprise Database Server v8.1.5 delivered 40,794 transactions per minute-C (tpmC) performance at a price/performance of $104/tpmC and convincingly beats all current single-instance Oracle TPC-C results. The results prove the superiority of HP's V-Class HyperPlane architecture, which offers customers more end-to-end 64-bit computing power and a higher-performance solution at a lower cost than competitors.
"For enterprise customers requiring speedy, online transaction processing response time, today's results prove that, with its demonstrated power, performance and growth path, the HP 9000 V2200 is ideally suited to meet their needs," said Janice Chaffin, general manager for HP's High Performance Systems Division. "Customers also can be assured that HP and Oracle will continue to work closely together to provide optimized, integrated technology at the highest performance and availability, and lowest cost of ownership."
The following table shows the top single-instance Oracle TPC-C results from HP and other vendors. A complete listing of results is posted on the Transaction Processing Performance Council Web site at http://www.tpc.org. -0-

(1) The TPC-C benchmark is an industry-standard benchmark used to simulate a complete computing environment where a population of terminal operators executes transactions against a database. It was developed by the Transaction Processing Performance Council, an independent organization formed by contributing member companies across the computer industry. It involves a mix of five concurrent transactions of different types and complexity executed either online or queued for deferred execution. TPC-C is measured in transactions per minute (tpmC).
(2) PA-RISC stands for Precision Architecture-reduced- instruction-set computing.
(3) HP-UX Release 10.20 and later and HP-UX Release 11.00 and later (in both 32- and 64- bit configurations) on all HP 9000 computers are Open Group UNIX 95 branded products.
