WaiLAN Debuts New DeltaFire Digital Subscriber Line Access System at Networld + Interop Show in Atlanta; Announces New Additions to Sales Management Team

Business Wire, Oct 12, 1998

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 12, 1998--WaiLAN Communications, Inc. today extended the range of its DeltaFire product line with the DeltaFire 250 Universal Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Access System with integrated management capability. The company also announced two new additions to sales management.

WaiLAN's DeltaFire 250 DSL Access System is a rack-mountable, central office T1/E1 line extension device. The system offers modularity and scalability, easy-to-use management features, and high availability features for telecommunications operating companies and service providers.

Modularity and Scalability

Each DeltaFire 250 unit holds and manages up to 16 DSL line cards. Each line connects to a WaiLAN AGATE 250 desktop network extension device. Up to 250 DeltaFire 250 systems can be stacked or "cascaded" to operate together as one large system with 4,000 ports. All of these lines can then be managed as one system rather than 250 separate systems.

Management Features

The DeltaFire 250 Access System has a network management card to manage up to 16 line cards, with each system having up to 16 slots for line cards. This management module has two 10 Base-T Ethernet interfaces for uplink and downlink connections to other systems, to form an integrated management system. The system or network manager can manage these devices either through a standard SNMP management console or a Web browser for local or remote control.

High Availability Features

The DeltaFire 250 is equipped with redundant (dual) power supplies that allow for continued operation if one unit goes down; but more importantly, it allows for load-sharing during normal operations. The power supply unit is hot-swappable. Each line card also is hot-swappable.

Pricing and Availability

The fully loaded DeltaFire 250 with 16 Multi-rate Symmetrical DSL (MSDSL) line cards is priced at less than $500 per port and will be available in the 4th calendar quarter of 1998.

New Virtual LAN Functionality for DeltaFire 500 Remote Access Switch Server

The DeltaFire 500 Access Switch Server, announced earlier this year and also available in the 4th calendar quarter of this year, supports up to 24 mixed DSL ports and is targeted toward multi-tenant buildings that require high-speed symmetrical or asymmetrical communications. The DeltaFire 500 switch now offers Virtual LAN (or VLAN) functionality giving users performance and cost advantages not offered by other DSL vendors. The DeltaFire 500 may be installed on the customer premises, avoiding the need to go outside the campus to connect individual buildings separately to different Internet Service Providers' Point of Presences (POPs). Network managers at corporations and educational campus settings can avoid the expenses associated with fiber optic links, T1/E1 circuits or ISDN lines.

Additions to Sales Management

In a separate announcement, WaiLAN Communications, Inc. announced two new additions to the U.S. Sales Management team. Sam Flores has been appointed as Sales Manager for the Western Region, and Howard "Easy" Mahaffey as Sales Manager for the Eastern Region in the U.S.

Sam Flores has more than 20 years of experience in sales and management for

HP, Apple Computer and Intergraph. In his previous position, he was Vice President of Sales at Hamilton Software. H. "Easy" Mahaffey was Director of Sales and Marketing for National Internet Source before joining WaiLAN. Previously, Mr. Mahaffey was Director of LAN Product Sales at RAD Communications and worked at RADCom.

WaiLAN Communications, Inc. develops and markets a family of DSL access switches, T1/E1 extension devices, and DSL bridge and router products for high-speed Internet access and remote LAN interconnectivity. WaiLAN's solutions enhance services provided by LECs, CLECs and ILECs. WaiLAN is one of the only vendors that can provide symmetrical transmission of data at 7 Mbps. The company is strongly committed to producing products that are easy to install, use and maintain, and to providing excellent customer support.
