Portland Lawyer to Lead Oregon State Bar Business Section; Partnership Between Oregon Business Lawyers and Accountants Announced to Support Oregon Emerging Business Initiative

PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 2, 1998--The Oregon State Bar Business Law Section elected Portland lawyer and Chairman of Oregon Entrepreneurs Forum Donald L. Krahmer, Jr. today to serve as Chairman of the Oregon State Bar Business Law Section for the coming year at the group's annual meeting held at the Portland Hilton.

Krahmer announced at the annual meeting that the Oregon Society of Certified Accountants (OSCPA) would join forces with the Oregon State Bar Business Law Section to support the Oregon Emerging Business Initiative. Key agenda items of the Initiative include strengthening the ties between higher education and economic development in Oregon to encourage entrepreneurial activity, seeking tax policy which encourages investment by angel investors in Oregon and increasing emphasis on entrepreneurial education and internships for students and teachers in high school curriculums. OSCPA Chair-elect Raymond Johnson also attended the meeting and announced the OSCPA Board's endorsement of the Initiative and the partnership with the Oregon State Bar business lawyers.

The partnership between Oregon business lawyers and certified public accountants on emerging business issues should be a powerful combination for making Oregon one of the most attractive locations for emerging growth companies in the next decade," said Johnson. Both Krahmer and Johnson committed to raising the standard of professional services provided to emerging growth companies in Oregon as well as increasing the amount of mentoring activities for younger professionals in the state.

Members of the Business Law Section Executive Committee, chairpersons from the Oregon State Bar Executive Committees of the Computer Law Section, Securities Law Section, Taxation Section, Alternative Dispute Resolution Section and Corporate Counsel Section, Oregon State Bar Executive Director Karen Garst, University of Oregon Law School Dean Rennard Strickland, Northwestern School of Law School Dean James Huffman, Atkinson Graduate School of Management Dean and former Willamette University College of Law faculty member Bryan Johnston will meet with Johnson on tomorrow (Saturday, October 3rd) at Salishan Lodge on the Oregon coast to make plans for the coming year.

The Business Law Section also elected: Carmen Calzacorta, partner at Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt, P.C. (Portland) as Chair-Elect; Gerry Gaydos, partner at Gaydos, Churnside & Walro, PC (Eugene) as Secretary and Brendan McDonnell, partner at Tonkon Torp as Treasurer (Portland). Calzacorta and McDonnell also both serve on the Oregon Entrepreneurs Forum Board of Directors. Gaydos serves as a member of Oregon Entrepreneurs Forum.

Newly elected members at large include Bryan Land, Arnold Gallagher Saydack Percell & Roberts, PC (Eugene); Timothy O'Rourke, Corey Byler Rew Lorenzen & Hojem (Pendleton); Brent Bullock, Perkins Coie (Portland); Todd Bauman, Stoel Rives (Portland); Catherine Shaw, Miller Nash (Portland); Kevin Keillor, Hurley Lynch & Re PC (Bend); Wayne Kinkade, Saalfeld Griggs Gorsuch, Alexander & Emerick, PC (Salem); Donna Kreitzberg, Allen Fellows (Portland) and Tim O'Hanlon, Mautz Baum & O'Hanlon (Pendleton).

The Oregon Business Lawyer will be edited by Willamette University Professor Vincent Chiappetta; Lewis and Clark Professor Jennifer Johnson and University of Oregon Professor Kim Krawiec. Joshua Barrett, Black Helterline and Ava Bartley, Stoel Rives will chair the Oregon Business Lawyer Editorial Board. Carol Emory, Emory and Associates will chair the group's continuing legal education committee. William Stone, Tonkon Torp will chair the emerging business/venture law committee.
