Conferencing Functionality

on Both Sun Solaris and Windows NT

White Pine Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: WPNE), a leading provider of multimedia conferencing applications, today announced the immediate availability of ClassPoint(TM) on the Solaris(TM) operating environment offered by Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Award-winning ClassPoint is White Pine Software's first integrated, client-server application solution geared toward the corporate training and education markets for group distance learning. ClassPoint has been available on Windows NT since April 1998.

"The Solaris operating environment is a proven server backbone for the user-intensive Internet, and can easily support multimedia conferencing solutions," said Brian Croll, director of marketing, Sun Microsystems. "Customers deploying a distance learning product, such as White Pine's ClassPoint server component, can rely on Solaris for high performance and availability."

ClassPoint enables affordable, real-time, instructor-led distance learning over the Internet, turning computers into classrooms by connecting students or employees for fully interactive distance learning sessions. In addition to features enabling real-time audio, video, text chat and Web touring, ClassPoint also offers the data collaboration capabilities critical to any technology-based distance learning application through the integration of Microsoft NetMeeting's whiteboarding and application sharing features.

ClassPoint delivers a virtual classroom experience, from registration, to in-class discussion, to post-class assignments. ClassPoint has three software components: an instructor client, a student client, and a server that runs on Windows NT and now on Solaris. ClassPoint works over a standard LAN-based or dial-up IP connection, with a minimum requirement of 33.6 kbps (56.6 kbps or higher is recommended).

"White Pine Software is excited to bring ClassPoint to the Sun Solaris platform," said Gary Dietz, product manager of vertical solutions, White Pine Software. "With the prevalence of Solaris in the engineering, higher education and ISP markets, ClassPoint now offers these customers the capability to provide a leading edge, real-time distance learning solution to their respective audiences."

The Windows NT version of ClassPoint has received numerous industry awards since its debut in April 1998, including the "Best New Business Conferencing Product" award announced at the DVC '98 Spring Conference as well as Advanced Imaging magazine's "Solution of the Year 1998" in the category of interactive imaging and communication/multimedia as profiled in the June 1998 issue.
